AC went hot after a couple of hours

The run home from Dubbo was pretty uneventful, except for a small problem with the AC. When we were coming into Goondi, about 2.5 hours since the last stop, the air slowly got warmer and warmer. Dropping the temp setting increased the fan speed but it didn't make the air any colder. We ended up winding down the windows for the last 10 minutes before stopping for lunch.
After lunch I started up the Z and plugged in Conzult to look at the temp sensors. The AC worked fine!
After about another 3 hours of driving it warmed up again. I tried changing the temp and switching the AC off then back on but no change. We did a quick driver change but switched off the engine - about 30 seconds max. When I started up again, the AC worked normally for the remainder of the trip.
It doesn't sound like low gas and I can't come up with any other explanation. Any ideas???

Same thing happened to me too

I experienced a period of hot air on the drive back, as well. Knocked the temp setting down a couple of degrees, but made no difference. I was starting to put it down to low AC gas, but then it started pumping cold air out again. Got me beat!

I had it happen on the way to Tassie

last Christmas. It was in the high 30's outside and the AC started blowing hot (ambient air me thinks). So turned it off for about 20 min and turned it back on and all was fine (and has been since). I believe it may have a thermal trip for the AC clutch.
