well i hav been searching for almost a year now for a 3rd brake light penal and evrytime one comes up it gets snapped up before i get a chance.

so im almost to the point of making my own.. so far my idea is to buy a large sheet of perspex. but in saying that for the length required for my car i would allso have to get at least a meter in width(they wont just sell me a strip of it)

from there i would then cut it in the shape of the infill area and heat and bend it so it sits rite then paint the back with black leaving a small strip clear for some LED's(allso thinking about tinting the small area so it looks black but light can still shine thru) ...from there im trying to figure out whether to glue the strip onto something that would be easier to mount aswell as alow it to sit out abit and flush

some ideas on mounting and anything else would be appreciated cause while i did alot of plastics when i was in high school this is really the 1st time i hav done anything like this. and if it turned out allrite and i had enuf interest i would think about making and selling these on here

    what do you guys think?

They Only cost a bit more than $300 and you can grab em from Nissan,UAS and coz to name a few. Theyre about the same price between the three as i recall. Got mine from coz as he was the cheapest willing to post (UAS say they wont post)

Good idea bud,i havent seen one up close, they are in high demand,if you could replicate a stronger/cheaper example or your own design?
    Most people would rather a replica,being a 300zx light,who knows?
Trouble is finding one for closer examination

That sounds good. I am also chasing one of these as my one is snapped in about 3 places, making a new one is def an option. As for the perspex you can buy black perspex. Dont know how you would do the light though, might have to be an inserted piece.

yes but to me abit more then $300 is expensive when if i could get the materiel cheap enough and enough interest i would be looking at selling for around $100ea..
and yea im still wondering if people would want to install a non nissan product.

but yea i wouldn't go with black perspex coz i would want to continue the stock look of clear with black backing. and as i said tinting the break light area so the led's can still shine through may look pretty cool :)

I think it would be VERY difficult to get it right. The amount of stuffing around wouldn't justify the cost saving IMO.

yep... to the OP if youve ever actually looked at one, its slightly curved and the smoothed edges would be rather hard to diy i would think... just save for a week or two and buy an oem one:rolleyes:...

Maybe ZToy should have a look at this..........a fiberglass infill with a cut out for the third light could work. You could paint it either black or the colour of your hatch. Mine had been done in a similar way http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/garage_vehicle.php?do=view_vehicle&id=429 Only difference is that with mine whoever did the job filled it completely so that it looked like part of the hatch. Looks pretty good though IMHO :).

On a black car i agree, looks good... but on any other colour it makes the rear end look unfinished, the tail lights stop to abruptly...

Yeah I reckon it looks kinda weird too. But anyways the basic point of our posts are:

    BUY AN OEM ONE!!!!

$300+ is nothing when putting money toward your z

i agree zx devil...wile it looks a lil beta on the vert coz verts hav that whole ute with a hardtop look...on normal hatch's other then black when welded up they dont look to flash at all...deff need to continue the curve of the lights nothing about the 300 lights are squared off so it just dosnt suit it imho

Mate, it'll be a headache to make and it'll probably look shite when you're done. Just save yourself the trouble and buy a new one from Nissan.

On my black zed there is a fiber glass knock off installed. Installation previous to my ownership. No light also, but it looks exactly the same as the real strip installed on Amandas blue zed. Its also been painted the same as the body. Looks sexy. Black zeds always anyways :zlove:

When time permits i am going to make a mold of Amandas strip and make some fiber glass copies. Incorporating the light and the shadow black that's on the new ones. (Amandas has that typical fade out about it now, due to age)

Ive got a fair idea on how i plan to do it as well. So touch wood it should turn out good.

But as always, knock off are always knock offs.

Buy OEM if you want to save time and frustration.

Plus we all enjoy that feeling about buying new nissan parts....issue is the price comes back and bites you hard. :(

Few pics showing mine off

Have to agree, black Z's just look awesome.......pity my new one is silver :(. Oh well, at least it's not red :D. I think if you were to make these infill panels there would be a real market for them, if the price was right.

Yeah i think fibreglass moulds are definitely the way to go imo... the shape would be too hard to fully replicate if you attempted to carve it up out of perspex...

Mmm so someone is going to start to sell the same thing that I already am making on here.
