Anybody come across a manual gearbox rebuild kit for our box or am I going to have to dig up part numbers and fun stuff like that?

never heard of a rebuild kit.

just buy a new box... yes its expensive.. but they seem to last 20+ years with mild abuse...

Gearboxes are normally disassembled, the parts are then assessed for serviceability & replaced as required.

This is something i am interested in also. Are rerplacement parts easy enough to find? Yes they do withstand a lot of abuse but i cant help but think if an engine pull is on the cards it makes sense to refresh the box too once it reaches a given point in it's service life.

$200 for a diy rebuild is a fair bit cheaper than $2000 for a new box.

    $200.00

What do you get for $200.00?

Found one for a similar gearbox that included bearings, gaskets and synchros for around the $200 mark.

Out of interest what specifically are the parts that suffer general wear and tear the most on these?

Also, is there something that commonly lets go in catastrophic fashion on high power Zeds? The weak link.

I've never heard of a box failing only people saying 'it's good for xxx bhp'.

Let me know how you go with this Ryan. Our Patrol's gearbox is noisy as ever & apparently is the same five speed as the Z32's (with a transfer case on the rear of course) Might put a kit through it too eventually.

    Just found THIS.

Looks like it should do the job. Not wanting to fix anything broken, just go through and replace the shagged bearings and synchros on my spare box.

    Just found this too.

Also, apparently the 98 transmissions are in other nissans, so could possibly be picked up on the cheap from a wrecker.

Including shipping and labour, it's probably only a little more than buying a second hand box that's in an unknown state. One would hope that you end up with basically a new box when done.

Sounds like the short version is to only do this if your synchro's are ok or you can do the labour yourself. Otherwise, buy a new box, or perhaps get one out of a newer Navara or Pathfinder as the OP stated.
