Should of started a build thread ages ago so there's a bit of catching up to do.

Where to start? Well some of you will already know i own a TT 2+0 Japspec that was left in a paddock to die for years.

It was covered in leaves and all soughts of critters had made it there home.

But open up the doors and it looked like new! No dash cracks, perfect interior.

Guy said it needed a fuel pump and some wiring, sounded like a zed to me so i bought it.

Get it home and take out the fuel pump to see where its at.

Well he didn't lie about it needing a new pump.

    But what about the tank?

    Nice eh?

So about this time is when i join the forums and hunted down a new tank which came with an NA pump. Thing looked new, $300, drove 2 hours picked it up and took it home.

Now getting the old tank out and the new one in seemed like too big a job for me so i gave that a miss but hooked up the tank to the engine to see if i could get it to start.

After a lot of trouble shooting and rewiring i managed to get all six cylinders running smoothly. But had craploads of oil out the back and in the passenger IC.

Put it down to a shot turbo so i started an engine pull.

After taking the engine out i felt more confident about the fuel tank and gave it a go too.
Wasn't too bad. Wait, the whole thing was hell, the filler took ages cos i cant get the back wheels off due to a lock nut..

Anyway so engine out, new tank in.

Got some turbos off Sanouske and injectors too, Thanks again for taking care of me.

Had Arvin service the injectors and cant wait to put them in. Nice guy and a great job. Hope to make it to the techday to catch up again.

So at this point with the engine out i started thinking about a bay tuck and deletes, so off i went and took out all the usual stuff.

Now i knew from the start the roof was rusty, what i didnt know was the bottom of the windscreen was too. After finding some i took out the front screen and dash, i say it like it was nothing, but in reality its like a second engine pull.
All the stuffs now living under my bed with Mr Bumpy

So here's a little pic of my rust issues, Ive already checked other areas and the rest of the car seems fine.

My plan of attack is to De-stitch the welds and take off the roof and top of the firewall and stitch in a donor one from a wreck.
Not sure if 2+2 and 2+0 are the same in this respect, if anyone can shed some light on the matter id appreciate it.

So i with the firewall this weekend

First up i cleaned the area with the wire angle grinder so i could see the spot welds, then proceeded to pilot drill them all.

After the piloting i used a step drill to take out the rest of the welds then a paint scraper and hammer to separate the steel.

Looks pretty nasty under there but it wouldn't surprise me if its the norm.

After a wire brush they came up alright.

This afternoon i welded up everything but didn't get a chance to grind back and take some photos.

Hopefully i get some time to tomorrow.

Im still looking for a panel donor in NSW,
Like the middle of NSW not the border!

For now the Zed sleeps in its temporary home...

But yeah so far its been a blast i really cant wait to finish so i can finally see what its like to drive one of these beasts, the most i got to do was driving it up the ramps.

    To be continued....

Awesome work mate, funny how you didn't want to change a fuel tank but would happily pull an engine haha.

  4. Anti

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

    sick wheels, jelous

Thanks to Martin Ive been able to continue working on the rust problems i have.

Cut the roof skin out completely and cut out the donor roof and lined them up.

    Looks pretty neat.

Wire wheeled both surfaces and gave them a few coats of kill rust.

Out with the old, in with the new

Should have it all welded up by this afternoon.
Then i can start looking for a firewall section....

i wonder what Mr. insurance man will say since you cut the roof up :p

Just the skin dude, nothing else was cut.

There flimsy enough as it is without cutting them up and adding a shitload of heat.

Its like saying i wonder what Mr. Insurance will say about you cutting vents in your guards or bonnet......

ah okay, it sounded like you cut the whole roof off and replaced it.

taking a roof skin off and replacing it is no issues so long as its done correct, and what you are doing looks ok, personally I dont drill right through the panels very carefully just through the ones I want to remove, also pays to get some panel bond (panel glue for cars) into the new joints for an extra bit of strength, but dont put it where you wish to weld.

I got lucky with this one and the weld spots were spaced differently on both bits, so i can fill them fairly easily.

Now its just a matter of getting some gas for my welder and getting a nice line across the targas.
( mate gave me back an empty bottle and Atomic Gas supplies are dicking me around)

From the 2 bits i have it looks like the drivers side targa sits higher on the windows edge for some reason, checked my rubber seals and there all seated home....odd.
