I need to install an IAT sensor for the ecu. Before I actually went and looked, I had planned on installine in on the IC pipe pre-throttle body hardpipe (the 2.5in piping have threaded bungs there already), but they are too small.

Instructions say it should be as close to the throttle body as possible. This means welding a bung on the pre throttle pipe.

Why does it have to be before throttle body? I am happy to not have it direct mounted on the plenum as some have suggested (due to heat soak issues), but what about on a threadded fitting on this soft hose?

Having it here is most convenient from a wiring perspective (uses the fuel temp wiring) and also ease of install and install reversal perspectives.

    Thoughts please! :zlove:

That hose isn't going to see enough airflow once you open the throttle bodies (It's the idle air hose).

I can't think of any better options than putting it in the pre TB pipes.

I can't think what inside the plenum looks like under the balance tube there, you might be right if the idle stuff is isolated from the rest of the plenum volume tho.

I thought it was a now redundant loop parallel to the balance tube.

Unless it's been cut out in yours that rear pipe connects to a separate chamber in the rear of the plenum, runs through that tube to the centre of the balance pipe so that idle air is distributed equally between the banks.

I would be hesitant to use the balance tube for air temp either way, it might work fine but it might give you a messy signal as pressure difference between the banks changes/equalises and it will also be receiving air that has had a lot (relatively) of contact with hot metal in the plenum and balance tube.

Sorry to be off topic, and I definetly don't want to hijack the thread, but what is that coating over the plenum?
I love the look of that.

Thanks, good info, sounds like some welding is in order! Dammit :bash:

I would be ok with using the hot air, but the lack of actual flow is an issue!

It is the 'Wrinkle' finish, black. I love the stuff!

No worries, it's not like I've tested this stuff but I definitely would test it's accuracy mounting somewhere like that before trusting it to control my engine.

Any chance you'd be able to re-tap the existing bung to suit the sensor or is the size way off?

Before the throttle body. After the Intercooler. Pick a spot and make it work.

    Fabrication will be required.

It needs to be in the main airflow.

The bung in the long pipe next to the rad is maybe 3/8 and the IAT is M14. The kicker is having to remove the pipe to re thread.

Rather get ztoy to bust out the welder on the intake pipe ;)
