Hi all, just a quick question for the Zd'ers.

What's the recommended maximum horsepower so as not to totally root up your automatic transmission too quickly. I've been looking but can't find anything solid.

    Your advice is appreciated!

Anything above stock on a flogged out automatic transmission wont last long. If it's been rebuilt then it all depends on how it was done. The shop who did it will inform you the recommended maximum power based on the internals they used to re-co it as it varies.

    Crappy answer I know.

I've been suggested a shift kit a few minutes ago. But still don't know what to aim for.... Thanks for the round-a-bout response. :)

that question is too vauge. stock auto or built? if its stock and original it would wear out even at stock power levels if you drive it hard. the zed auto is extremely strong once built right though, it is comparable to TH-400 internals so the sky is the limit unless you are talking 800+ which is when you swap in a power glide :D

Now, that's more like it. So what's involved to up the tranny? What can I buy? Is 600hp achievable with 880 injectors, Nistune and Front mount. I'm looking at turbos now, but being a noobo I need to find out what else I need. Thanks for info.

You just need to find a reputable tranny workshop who knows the RE4-R03A box and tell them to build it as strong as possible. Its normally around $1600 or so to rebuild the box with stronger bands etc + the R/R labour. Then you need a high stall converter and a good valve body. I would budget around $3000 all up.

regarding your other questions you need a big dollar build to get 600hp

My last tranny, a 16 y/o $400 2nd hand job with VB mod survived 4 years of thrashing and I've just had it rebuilt @ $2,900 including extra clutch plate. NB: running 220rwkw at 14psi.
An a/m oil cooler probably helped the last tranny last the distance.:p

Call me sick, but that reads so funny " My last 16 year old $400 Tranny", it's funny for so many reasons ( for people who know you:eek:)

you missed the other bit after your quote... it reads

"2nd hand job" what was wrong with the tranny's 1st hand job? more than $400? I'm sure you could get the full deal for a whole night for that!

    :D

Keas build the best Nissan automatics in Australia, give them a call and take your first born as down payment.

Fantastic, thanks for that. Perhaps 600hp is too high. I'll have to talk with Tektrader when he gets back from visiting Chappel Corby. :D

To increase the power above stock really should require the installation of a line pressure controller (HKS) or a valve body modification (done at any trans shop).
The increase in line pressure subsequently increases the force applied to the band servo and clutch packs.
The resultant harder changes compensates for the extra power that the car is generating.

The extra power on a standard Auto gearbox will just cause increased slipping between changes, and slipping creates wear.
So, whilst the auto could handle 300rwkw, it wouldn't last long between rebuilds that consisted of clutch packs and band(s).

To reduce slippage further, there are special clutch packs for hi power applications as well as bands made from a more grippy friction material and/or kevlar.

KEAS are also awesome...my uncle had his tranny built there for his 400rwkw+ XR6T after destroying a few tranny's...they are great and the VL guys are in love with them

The VLs also share the same auto more or less as far as I'm aware.
