methods of fixing this problem? wanting a interior re-trim but cant till i stop the leak. I notice the previous owner tried to use silicon but hasnt worked at all

A recent thread described a method to fix which involved inserting rolled up inner tube rubber into the targa rubber seals so that the inserts woud expand and force the targa seals against the window to prevent leaking. I couldn't find it with the search facility but you might have more luck.
the rubber between the top of your window and the targa......stick anything behind it so it sits flush against the targa......clean out targa drainage holes, and also i dont know how to do this one but you can also adjust the window height so it closes higher and hence no room for water to seep through....
Probably a good idea to check that the door hasn't dropped slightly. There is a tech article to adjust the door hinges to return to normal height. Just a thought since seeing the above comment about raising the window height.
