I heard there is a way to remove the egr without removing the engine

I heard there is a way to remove the egr without removing the engine, has anyone here done this, am planning to do a plenum pull wonderin if it is possible to get this done when the plenum is off

ahzi theres heaps of threads about egr removal, have a search ;)

have a read through this aswell to understand where it is and how to remove it

the pipes coming off the egr have a flange that bolts to the underneath of plenum, you will either need to cut these flanges off and weld up the whole in the flange and bolt back to plenum or get something like this

there will also be another pipe which comes off the unit and goes down to the manifold, this will need to be removed and same story with the other pipes you removed...with this one the nut will need to be cut off the pipe and the hole welded up in the nut, and then bolted back in...

    thats pretty much it...;)

Yes I did it 2 weeks ago

Just cut off side pipes, loosen exhaust connection but don't take out, undo passenger side rear flange, (mine broke off at flange after I undid 1 bolt).

Undo driver side flange. Undo bolts holding EGR to motor, undo exhaust connection and spend some time trying to get the whole pipe and egr out. You will have to twist it a bit.

It helps if you have a uni joint on your socket, strong fingers and short spanners. I think that I also had the passenger side heater stand pipe off too (was replacing heater hoses also)

    I'll be quick.......

    Don't want to upset anyone!:)

Removing your EGR can have a couple of consequences.....

    • the small gain it MIGHT give you could be offset by damage caused by over rich mixtures and increased combustion chamber temps..
    • Don't get caught by the Police with your EGR pipes blocked or plated off. It changes your emissions and they will put a little yellow sticker on your car which might cost you a whole lot of money!

    Only a thought!:zlove:

But did nissan remove the ERGs in the later models???

    yes but....

I suspect that the later model zeds where the EGR was removed also had slightly different ECU programming.

I get flammed for this all the time, but I still believe that the removal of the EGR on an NA car which runs high compression can be a dangerous thing to do. Just my opinion.

    Cheers

    I might be wrong....

but I think even the guys selling the EGR removal kit state it's for race and not for street purposes.:)

In the tech section,Photo's, coolant hose by-pass is a photo of my engine with the complete EGR removal, including the removal of the mount cast with the lower intake manifold. Slick and gives access to the det sensor in car. Much more room behind the engine, clean & neat and no bad after effects:cool: That's cool

Shut EGR down via control lines

I believe that vacuum to the top of the egr opens the egr, a spring closes it if atmospheric pressure is to the top of the egr, and under boost you need atmos+boost to ensure it stays closed.

So if your car is NA opening the top control line of the EGR to the atmos' pressure will allow the egr to stay shut.

Boosted cars; I did mine by running the egr control line to the intake piping where there will be atmos or boost pressure to keep the egr closed in all situations. This allows removal of the control vac lines and control solenoid.

My car now runs a lot smoother when cruising. I suspect that now the car is getting old and compression is down running 100% fresh air is better than having exhaust gas coming through. I suspect im getting slightly better gas mileage too.

Beats ripping it out, less work and if you want to re-activate it later its easier than if you ripped it out entirely. Plus if your car is getting older like mine unbolting the exhaust part of it would be really difficult.

    Good point.....

There's a lot of heat associated with those bits. Trying to remove them quite often ends up in broken bits like bolts or studs and can cause more problems that it's worth.

Plus....with the little room available....think of all the lost skin and bloodied knuckles!:(
