    Hey mate.
Firstly as Vaughan said, Check your Coolant Temperature Sensor.

It's the plug on the left in this picture. Unplug it and if the connectors are corroded (corrosion is indicated by a greenish flaky looking rust). If your's is corroded, use a nail file and scratch it away back to metal. Clean both the plug and the connector.
I'm currently trying to figure out why I'm running rich as well. CTS is easy to eliminate (even for someone of my mechanical ability) and can be checked with a multimeter.

Where abouts in melb are you? Has your car been run on ConZult or datascan? There's a few of us that have access to ConZult here. I'm in SE suburbs (near Glen Waverley) and currently I've got Chad's Consult cable so I can check it. If you're in Dandy I can give Chad his cable and you can goto him :p Maybe we need to have another tech day in vic so we can all figure out why our car's run rich...

If you've spent this much money and you're still not happy with their work, get another opinion.

You can try Joe Imbesi of Top Choice Motor's in Montrose.

DO NOTHING ..!! .. you have spent $6000 with this

firm ... and they now tell you that you may have a thermostat problem ... ???!!! .. someone needs to get real here .. !!!! .. take the car back, talk to the head honcho ...and tell him that you are going nowhere until your car is up and running, fully smick ... and that you are not paying one penny more ...
    ...
.. and the alternative ..?? ..without resolution, full bloody exposure in every way possible ...!!!! .. :bash: :bash: :bash:

    christ ,, just unbelievable ... :( :( :( :(

Do you have all meters available?

I suggest you get something that can show you what the ecu is 'seeing' and 'doing'.

There are more expensive things out there, but for a start I highly recommend ecutalk on a PC or PPC. All it costs you is the blazt cable from caz and some adapters depending on yer setup. (see prev posts).

Once you have this youll realize whats on the dashboard doesn't mean much, and you'll have more than revs/temp/oil/boost. You can read air flow, fuel injection, Auxiliary air control, coolant temp, and heaps more. It doesn't tell everything but will help you to debug your z car, with help from your aus300zx buddies of course.

For idle trouble you'll want to look mainly at AAC percentage (above 15 below 25), Air flow (very low and stable), injector time (err 2 - 3ms), coolant temp (about 80C), revs (1400 cold dropping in small steps to about 750 warm).

By the way the 'choke' (IACV) uses an electric coil to heat a bimetal strip to control extra air for cold starting not the water temp. The ecu knows coolant temp. So if your thermostat opens too early or is stuck open; IACV closes you have less air but engine is cold so ecu runs more fuel youll run rich. So yes a faulty thermostat could be your problem.

ensure your auxiliary fan doesnt run when its idling & warm (a sure sign of coolant sensor not seen by ecu) that causes rich running, but will usually cause an error code.

my car is running rich and has idling probs, have just about checked everything and have already replaced the thermostat, my next step is for Tom to triple check the AFM then i think i might have to go for the injectors.

let us know if you fix/find the problem!

God damn it. Why did I reply to this thread. I was cursed :p 200m from my house, car starts to lose power. Foot to the ground and it won't upshift. At my drive in park it's hunting from 200 RPM to 1200 RPM and jumping around +occasionally stalling. GRRR. Looks like I have work to do tonight.

lol ... ITS CONTAGIOUS!!! .... like the chicken flu or bird flu or whatever its called!!

i'm starting to suspect that it may have something to do with rain.... maybe water is getting on the afm or finding its way somewhere in the engine bay where it shouldn't be.

    Dam irractic idle

    Hey there

We also have erratic idle. Getting it sorted on Monday (hope fully) Reving between 1.5 - 2.2 revs when stopping at lights. Great subject!! Keep the ideas coming.
