    Hi guys,

I'm experiencing a problem with my power steering. Occasionally, the steering would get really tough, requiring extra amount of force to get it past the tough spot, then steering would be effortless. I've tried lifting the car off it's wheels to remove any potential air bubbles in the power steering lines by turning left & right to lock 10-15 times, but to no avail.

I went underneath to look for any potential leaks, and I found one by the oil filter. It is situated close to the driver-side wheel, and I think this might be the problem.

Attached are a few pics of the same area from different angles:

yes thats the steering rack seal, looks like it has perished. had a few of them in the shop lately that have needed replacing.

    Hi Fleet,

    Thanks for your reply :)

Did your customers experience similar issues with their steering, and were you able to fix it with a new seal? The amount leaked doesn't appear to be much - there is a film of fluid over the assembly in the above pic, but I haven't noticed any puddles beneath the car to suggest a lot of fluid loss.

How extensive was the damage (if any) when the seal perished? I hope that it was just a simple replacement.

    similar problem

G'day mate I've got a similar problem with mine, gets really hard for a second or two then gets better. What I found is that the speedo drops out at the same time, causing the car to stiffen up the power steering.the cause of this, so I'm told, is a loose conection or bad earth behind the dash. Hope this helps, that is if your speedo is dropping out at the same time.

well only usually because they have not kept their eye on the power steering fluid level in the reservoir and let the fluid run too low, causing steering problems.

my was doin the same.mate i found when my steering went really notchy the uni joint at the bottom of the steering shaft was absolutly shagged. when your car is in the air, just get someone to move the sterring wheel while your looking at the joint, you'll soon see if yours is the same.
