hi guys my car will be getting its respray in the new year, and i want to know how far i should strip it down before i send it to the painters....

my list so far of what i beleive needs to be done.....

remove front and rear bar,and gaurds so they can be srayed seperately to avoid unsitely join lines....
remove all weatherstrips and the targa hook....
    remove door jam
remove/cover interior as much as possible
    remove headlights and tail lights
    remove wipers and window cowlings....
remove front and rear window seals,so that you dont get a join line

do i need to remove door locks and handles to be sprayed seperately?
    am i missing anything

car is being sprayed from pearl white to white with blue/turqoise pearl,so not a major colour change, just the pearl is changing really....
engine bay is not getting painted, but every other surface panel is.....

    any advice appreciated,cheers

    i would be

removing the door handles also so the paint can be fixed up around that area.

When are you getting it done exactly? and by who/how much? I'm looking at getting mine done in the next 6 months too

just come down and have a geez of whats left of my car mate...

secondly.. leave the fenders and bars on.. painter will need em on to line em all up properly before removing to prime and edge.. they should be painted on the car as there can still be a difference in colour if they not all sprayed continuously together

Im in the process of sanding mine atm,

just wondering- am i better off just using paint stripper or should i just battle away with the electric sander? I have never done much work with auto paints so can a stripper be used wrong and do damage?

when they fitted my bodykit, they sprayed it with the front and rear bar on.
the front bar looks fine, the rear bar isn't too good but thats due to a poorly made bar, not the painter.
can put up some pics if you like ross.

Everything on my car was dissasembled stripped down and painted. ALL panels including doors and tail gate where painted off the car.

I dont have ANY colour difference problems at all.

IMHO do it once and do it right. I even pulled the rear view mirrors and door handles apart to paint them. The final result is very worth it. :p

speaking of rear view mirrors....make sure you also paint the bit that shows when you automatically close them. theres nothing uglier then nicely painted mirrors and when you retract them you show a patch of old paint.

    Paint stripper

isn't that good. If you use it will eat away at the paint unevenly and you will need alot of it. So if you were thinking about using it I'm guessing were going to take it back to metal? If so I found that useing a paint scraper is the quickest and easiest way to do so. If your not carefull you can scratch the metal but you can fill any scratches in when the primer is applied. Useing the paint scraper on the plastic guards not a good idea, you can dig little gouges out. Paint stripper is really nasty stuff the vapour burns your eyes and throat. Anyway I'm certainly no pro when it comes to painting etc, so anyways good luck with it

I just had my Z done from Burgundy to Colorado Red. As Tektrader indicated everything came off + was done separately in an oven. No colour matching problems. They even sprayed the inside of the bonnet + tailgate. No need to take off headlights. They removed the tailgate weather strip + replaced original. I covered it with matt black pin-stipe tape which worked really well + can be replaced easily rather than spending 100's on new strip. Very professional job-total cost $3500.
