I noticed there's plenty of guys running decent times at the drags with Manual Transmissions, but I'm wondering if anyone has had to overcome gear-grinding or sticky gear problems to do so effectively?..

Reason I ask, my manual has very stiff gears compared to anything else I've ever driven, in particular I cannot shift the higher gears (3rd < 4th, 5th > 4th) quickly at high revs, without catching a bit and getting a grind/crunch...

Other people seem to have had the same issues, apparently due to a softer material used for the gear syncro's? and the only solution seems to be to change those gears carefully and gently to avoid the grind....:(

Back to the original question; Anyone who's ran 1/4 miles in a manual, have you had similar gear problems, and was there any solution to minimise or completely fix that issue?

    Cheers :)

Have you tried changing your gearbox oil? How old is it? Thats not at all normal operation. I have run 12.7 with my manual zed but my 5 spd shifts like it should.

    Yep...

Expensive sollution and yet VERY effective  Billet alloy shift forks. Originally valued at $1400 each. Require 2.

Can't break my box anymore :( I've tried.

Can shift gears alot smoother now. :) however, Synchro's still cop a beating:(

Will be changing oil shortly I think...

I bought the car back in April, just after the seller had a service done. He supposedly put in some pricey gear oil, but I'm beginning to doubt that now...
It's been about 4000kms since then.. how often should the gearbox and engine oil be changed outside of the regular servicing?

I did wonder how normal it was considering the times guys are managing to run in Manuals!..

    He he!!...

If my wife wasn't violent and psychicly connected to our bank account ;) , I might get away with that, but considering I cancelled my health insurance a while ago.....
    Thanks for the info though!

mine are kinda stiff and notchy, as if new actually.. if I shift slow, no probs, if I shift semi-quick like on the street while trying not to be too much of a hoon it's not so easy, but at the track when I really give it heaps, it's not really an issue.. could be the extra revs (or less rev drop) helping out but I'd give it a good go before throwing money at it.

that reminds me I need to check my gearbox oil level, the box has come off a couple of times and I'm not sure if they lost much of my precious redline.

Engine oil change every 5000km, some people do 10,000km depends how hard you drive etc. Gearbox and diff oil every 40,000km but I would do it now if you dont know when it was done last.

    Good Point..

I'm booked in for my 90,000km service in a couple of weeks, so I'll put in some gear oil as well to be safe.

    Cheers

    Grindin gears.

My gears only crunch from 4th to 5th if im changing quick but i don't get to use 5th on the strip anyway. im gunna change oil soon so hopefully that'll help, and maybe i should stop flat changing.

    Flat-Changing!!!

I'm cringing just thinking about that Bro!! - If I tried that the way my gears are at the mo, the stick would probably just break off in my hand!!!

    Yeah

Good call. I'm getting the clutch checked out as soon as I can, and I'll also drop in the lightest/highest quality gear oil I can afford.

    Cheers

i just put 3 litres of redline mt90 oil (best oil on the market, expect to pay $30 per litre) into mine, made a big difference, but will still get the occasional 4th to 5th grind, just depends how fast i shift (which is roughly .2 or so seconds..)

    Cool..

I'm getting the car looked at in about two weeks time, so I'll know if I just need to top up the gear-oil, or if something needs to be replaced...:(
I'll definitely drop in some MT90 when it's at the workshop.

My other half would need some persuading to unlock the bank-account for a performance clutch, but out of interest, how much are you letting it go for?

I thought my gear box was stuffed till I put redline light weight shock proof oil in my gear box and it feels like a new gear box its grate

What year is ur car ?? because I think they changed the synchros in like 1994 and I seam 2 remember 4th was the worst of the bunch so if you do have ur gear box rebuilt make sure they use the revised synchro set :p

I some times get a little bit of grinding when coming down from 5th or 4th in 2 second but at a high rpm but that probably because the synchros cant synchronize those gear at high rpm :p

    Redline eh?..

Fingers crossed that some good oil will do the job. (I might just set up a drip permanently feeding the geerbox!! :) )

I'll keep that in mind about the revised syncro's also.

    Cheers

btw.. MT90 is best for gears, lightweight shockproof best for synchros.

I don't recommend redline heavyweight shockproof at all. I had it in my box and it takes to long to warm up and made shifting gears much harder than the lighter oil I had in ther before I pulled the box. I am getting it built again, but stronger this time and will not use heavyweight again.
