i've taken off the radiator hardpipes to replace the thermostat but didn't have any 'liquid gasket' to apply prior to fitting back the hardpipes, so i'm on the prowl to get some later today. do any of you have a preference to a particular brand of liquid gasket? if so, would like to hear from you. otherwise, whatever the shop attendant recommends is what i'll get. cheers. ps. those allen bolts and 2 nuts on the hardpipes were a major b**ch! and i think my hardpipes are growing coral this is what happens when you use cheap tools from [insert asian country here].
mate, can't help you with the gasket stuff, but do yourself a favour and gather together that socket set, walk over to the rubbish bin and throw it in, then go down to your friendly tool supply shop and buy a decent set of sockets, otherwise i can foresee only a lot of swearing or even worse, a difficult to fix shearing of a bolt head, cheers
tools in their hard plastic case were already binned. luckily Bunnings didn't close til 9 in my area, so now I'm happy with my Stanley set. I used to think that spending extra $$$ on 'brand' tools was a bit of a waste... til now.
I used RTV from Locktite, which was Blue. Cant remember the name of it exactly apart from the brand. Its worked well and I havn't had a single drop of coolant leak past it.
Ive used all different brands of sealant, and they dont have too much difference except for colour usually. More important is surface preparation as in getting them as clean as possible, and applying the sealant evenly so that there are no thin spots that could leak, or too thick which can squeeze too much sealant into the engine and possibly cause problems.
Thanks guys for the input. I dropped by Bunnings after work today and bought marine-grade sealant which should do nicely. Forgot the name of it but it's black, so it's gotta be good Now it's back to the garage to finish off my dodgy-polish job on those blackened hardpipes!! It's gonna be a long night.
What is your choice, then. I am about to pull my hard-pipes and shop around some decent liquid gasket. Any particular brand or product? Uncle K-Zed
Gasket sealant I used the nissan gasket sealer and have had no problems with complete engine rebuilds. It's orange and available from your local nissan dealer.
go down to repco, buy some gasket maker that has a decent temp rating (200 or similar) and whack it on... brand doesn't make much difference but locktite is pretty decent brand
there is stuff all difference in the price of gasket maker when comparing the product with temperature resistance to 200 degrees or that with temperature resistance to 316 degrees ... for my p/pull this weekend, i have "loctite 596, hi-temp red rtv .. 316 degree" and "loctite hi-temp red" .. also 316 degrees .... loctite blue comes in at about 200 degrees resistance ... just go the higher temp resistance for safety ...!!!
Thanks for heaps of response. No spare car, no liquid gasket in hand, no further progress. Well, I hope to fix it prior to Sat gathering. Can anyone in SE Brisbane give me a lift to Uncle Baz on Sat.
wwwwaaaagggghhhhhhh ..... !!! how does 587 vary from 596 ... ??? thought my bid was higher ... lol..lol....!!! edit: .. are you sure that 587 is not last year's model .. ??? ..lol.. lol.. !!!
Industrial strength M8 Have you got some 6mm & 8mm flat and spring stainless washers? as I said I've got heaps of bolts. Have the car up on ramps by start time cos when we get there it will be AFG ( all f%^&$n go)
