Im posting this here as I dont think it belongs anywhere else yet as its an idea only. Also it needs as much viewing as possible to work.

How many would be interested in buying custom clear timing belt covers? So you could have all your chromed cam gears and belts etc on display 24/7 and not be worried about something taking out your timing belt.

The initial setup cost is really huge, but if enough people were interested then I could definately get a run of these. Would people pay $150, $200 for these?

How many would be keen, and importantly pre order for them?

looks nice but i think i would have a hard time paying that much for a bit of plastic..

what is used to make them? vacume molds?

    good idea, but....

good idea to spruce up the engine bay a bit, but isn't the other factor to consider dirt and grease. i imagine after a while they'd get a bit dirty and start to look pretty bad.
    just something to consider.
    cheers.

That's what I was just thinking..

They'd probably be a hassle to keep clean... Though they'd look pretty good if kept clean...

They would look good but the plastic would have to be good quality

in order to deal with the heat and not discolour. Also keeping them clean is a problem with RB's so I have heard. I got a price on making some out of alloy like the ones they use to sell. The initial cost like you said was fairly expensive but the rest were cheap as.

If they didn't have to come on and off to keep clean I may be interested.

    could be tempted.

i think timing belt covers are there more for personal safety actually.

$150-$200 seems like a reasonable price.

as others have said though, would be good if they could be removed with relative ease for cleaning purposes.

    Personal safety?

Experienced on my daughters Alfa Sud,engine running sounded like somebody was firmly tapping the block with a hammer. Ended up a mouse had gone through the timing belt/gear and made it jump a tooth. Luckily there was no internal damage, but it was the sound of a valve tapping the top of a piston. Re- timed and all OK, but could have been a disaster with these engines.

I would buy a set if they were $200 in the blink of an eye.

    No thanks.......>>

My cam gears are too dirty to show off and I could never be bothered keeping the covers clean inside and out.

It's not so much the look I'm interested in, but...

...the ability to visibly see if there is a problem with my timing belt.

I would look at the existing covers and attempt to

alter them slightly so they were more of a clip in/out so they could easily be removed for cleaning.
