    It sure can happen...

No. It's up to the insuree to provide all the information ... Ifnot then the ins company is within their legal (albeit unethical) rights to disallow/reduce the amount of a claim due to the insuree not providing all information that could "increase the risk" ... (or some legal mumbo jumbo to that effect)

Don't risk it ... get it acknowledged in writing

not wanting to sound like a know it all

but its called duty of discloser, plus the simple fact that when you are purchasing insurance for your vehicle, its not the insurers job to know your vehicle, but yours. if your gonna purchase a car, its generally a wise thing to know what u have just bought anlthough as they say ignorance is bliss. ( though i think that point may have been proven wrong on many occasions in my life).:zlove:

Well i got my insurance for $1000 through AAMI with a rating 1 and me being 25 with a $350 excess on a 93 NA.

I worked out for next year if i want to reduce the premium to $550 i just have to have an excess of $1900. this sounds like a bargain but then again i will have perminate rating 1 as of feb next year so that will rock.

I tried justcar insurance and they wanted me to pay $1500 for the same thing.

the aami price also includes a <koff>;) $4000 sterio :) so that is pretty sweet. also the only way for them to sput up the agreed value of the car.

just thought i would through in my 2cents

    Watch Out

Watch out for Torque - They are very strict when it comes to claims so one small discrepancy and they won't come up with the money!!!

2nded ... I had to request they add the words

"Grey Import- not an aus spec" twice before I got proof of it on the insurance document. If anyone else with an import has insurance with Torque (or for any other insurer for that matter) it's strongly suggested that you ensure that they note it on the policy and provide you a hard copy as proof....

Might upset a few apple carts but am sure people would like to know now whether they have a valid policy or not.

Remember, paying the premiums and the insurer accepting the premiums has NOTHING to do with whether they will pay up in the event of a claim discrepancy...

Mods: could I suggest we make a sticky of the subject of specifying "import" on insurance policies? With so many new members lately, I'd bet heavily that there are many forum member import owners blissfully paying their premiums who don't know about this loophole...

Does it meet Australian standards or not.

If the insurer, does not specifically say in the policy or have a clause that the car cannot be grey market/private import, and they accept the policy payment. Then that is that !!!

If the car has been upgraded on import to the relevant Australian standard. They would be hard pressed to dissallow your claim.

The import NA that has been modified to allow registration here, meets the AS standards, and the Nissan imported spec NA are the same car. There is no way they can argue their risk has increased because its a private import.

That would be thrown out of court.

The TT would be a different case I would think. There where never any TT's imported by Nissan. Therefore their risk would increase, not only cause it is Turbo but because of a 1000 other differences between the that and the NA Nissan imported car.

If I import back a Commodore from Hong Knog, and ensure it complys with the AS. Do you recon they would care! NO

Agreed... but contention is how many individual

policy owners who are just managing to keep their zed on the road and are in the stressful enough situation of having to make a claim would be prepared to take an insurance company (with it's own legal dept) to court?

One simple inclusion on the policy statement in the hands of the insuree now prevents any potential issues down the track...

I agree with your comments Tek' but for most people, it's not about winning a long winded expensive court case when you need to claim ... it's about sleeping at night now knowing you are covered...

Isn't that what the insurance is there for in the first instance? Not trying to start an argument here. Just suggesting a preventative measure to eliminate any crap later on...
