Looking for some advice on engine removal. Ive done plenty of ca , sr , rb removal and conversions in s and r chassis but the z32 is alot more complicated. Long story short, my plan is to do a ground up resto on my 93 TT z32. I do not have a hoist myself only a pit. I like to do as much as i can as im quite fussy and take care in what i do. I understand the best way is to remove the lot from underneath. Can the gearbox be removed, intake manifold and all acc. be removed and use a engine crane to remove from the top with no clearance issues? And refitted this way?
Ive seen it be done together but looked like there was clearance issues? i do not want to mark or damage anything. TT needs dumps removed ?
Ive removed together, its definitely a tight fit. If your worried about damaging anything ie transmission tunnel, firewall, front upper cross member, remove trans from the engine first. Yes dumps to be removed prior .
With gearbox removal: Unless you drain out the transmission fluid first, you would need a transmission's driveshaft plug/stopper. (Example:Supercheap item 131852) If you don't have one already.
For what it's worth the procedure outlined in the FSM slide EM45 - EM48 is to remove with trans attached. This would generally be my preference although I also remove upper plenum and bolt chains to lower plenum.
Thanks for the replys. Yes ive learnt that the hard way not draining the gearbox! So you remove through the top Rob aswell?
Unless you find removing the gearbox in car quite difficult, I'd go with splitting the engine and box and pulling them out separately. I have small arms so never had an issue getting to everything. Having done it both ways in the past, it can be a bit of a task getting the engine and gearbox out together (not hard, just awkward). Whereas with the gearbox off, you can pretty much just pull the engine up and out.
Agreed. I've removed & refitted my TT auto twice and refitted the engine once, all on my ownsome. Octopus spec arms help but it's also about being able to visualise where the bolts & bits are. All the pics & vids I've seen so far of engine plus gearbox removals & refits show a cast of several with the arse end of the car raised so high the front lip was touching the floor. Not a one man job and having extra help can be counter-productive unless they know what they're doing. If they're just random mates with tinnies in their hands you need to be prepared to bark at them like a Sergeant Major during the job
Finally got around to making some progress. Gearbox came out easy enough. To my surprise it has the oem clutch still! My question is, can the engine be removed without the intake plenum? I figured with this removed i can see alot more, disconnect more. Im not fussed if its the harder / longer way, i have plenty of time...
I’ve never attempted a combined motor & gearbox pull because it has always looked too awkward. Dropping the box first (auto & manual) has always been fairly simple and I’ve always left the upper plenum bolted to the engine during removal. I’ve always found a couple of tie downs looped around the upper plenum to be the perfect sling for the engine crane. Your donk can then be bolted directly to the engine stand rather than dropping your engine / gearbox combo onto the floor and then trying to separate them. Undoing flywheel / flexplate bolts with the engine still secured to the car would have to be an easier option IMHO
If you have or could get the Nissan engine removal brackets, attaching the rear bracket is a bit easier with the intake removed.
I believe the Nissan slingers are discontinued. Removing the upper plenum won't grant you much access that you don't already have anyway. Taking out the battery yields much better results by comparison IMHO.
As general information. The Nissan part numbers for the slingers. The one that mounts to the front right side 10006-30P10. Rear left side is 10005-40p10
just a heads up, you can remove a auto engine with Gbox still left in the car, however to pull an engine attached to a manual, they must be pulled together or the manual has to be removed first.
