Don't be so afraid to remove the fan module, then the a/c module under the dash and save yourself the frustration. Get the a/c degassed professionally. The rest you can do yourself. Buy a set of replacement Orings for the firewall a/c lines. Make sure to cap the open lines with duct tape once disconnected. Remove the glove box, the fan module comes out easier than you think. Then the a/c evaporator module comes out and the mystery bracket is right there. The loom will take 5 minutes to pull through.
after doing mine I figured it might have been easier to make a new hole in the firewall in a more convenient location for access to the cabin, the wiring loom definitely has plenty of length to support the move. getting the bolts off of the plate holding (cabin side of firewall) the cable in place are a pita and require way too much work. good luck, it is not an easy job.
