What makes the steering wheel shake Iv got new tyres, balanced and alignment, the tyre shop said the rims are perfect free from and defects. But iv still got wheels shake at 100klm especially at 120 when I let off the gas. What other components would cause this? cheers
If your wheels and tyres are completely free from defects(and are properly balanced)then your issues are most likely related to/caused by worn out or out of adjustment components of the front suspension(Ball Joints, Bushes, Tie-rod ends, Wheel-bearings or Steering Rack). A competent Suspension Specialist should be able to diagnose these items very quickly. Don't ignore this problem, as this increases the probability of the possible breakage of suspension components(and serious injury or worse)to yourself or other road-users.
Your problem WILL be warped rotors (brake disc). I am going through the same problem and have been for a few years. I have eliminated every component that could be loose or uneven, even down to the wheel spacers (5mm) the only thing left is rotors.
Did you ask the manager where you bought the tyres, or had them balanced or wheels aligned? They are supposed to be professionals. An incorrect wheel alignment won't cause vibration. It will cause pulling to the left or right, reduced traction & braking & excessive tyre wear. Vibration can be caused by out of balance rotating components, worn bushes & suspension components, or anything which allows excessive movement.
ok cheers guy I did just get a new rack put in but the shaking was there before that went in. Ill jacking the car up tonight and having a look at the bushes and get back to you. thanks
I do understand what you are saying but I haven't even gone through half a set of pads on these rotors. How could the be warped?
I have had Kitty for four years and still on the same set of pads I bought the car with. I have also replaced the tyres since ownership. Delaminated a tyre while in Tasmania. Nothing left to tighten or replace on mine except rotors. I'll get back to you in a couple of months when I can afford the rotors.
You don't need to replace the rotors if there is enough material left to have them machined. Steering wheel shake caused by warped rotors is usually evident when applying light brake pressure on a downhill run, usually around a speed of 80km/h.
I should've mentioned if the rotors are warped with light brake pressure you would be able to feel a slight pulsation in the brake pedal. The rotor runout can be checked using a dial indicator or a piece of coat hanger mounted against the rotor. The same procedure can be used to check the rim & also the amount of tyre runout.
maybe verify your rims are good, I have see a few tyre shops claims rims were good when they were not. you may even be able to do this your self if you can line something up perpendicular to the rim when jacked and rotate the rim and check for clearances. just a thought...
If the vibration is affected by engine load then it would be worth looking at the tail shaft. If the vibration is caused by warped rotors then it should be worst when you lightly apply the brakes at 100 km/h.
Ok it's not the rotates had them machined Had it on the hoist yesterday and the drive shaft looks good. Front bushing on the other hand could use a little oil. BAHAH only if it was that simple :rofl: So much play in all the rods just by pulling and pushing them. QUESTION: where is the best place to buy a full front end bushing kit ?
There is your problem try removing them and get it to the speed you get wheel wobble and see if it happens I run 25mm bolt ons on the front and get the same thing but at 70-80kph from my understanding slip on spacers are worse for wheel wobble
really that's interesting and reassuring at the same time . All good because I'm in the hunt for the perfect offset so that I don't have to run spacers. Now that I think about it I don't think it shook when I had the 19" wheels on without spacers, the ones that came with the car
My suggestion then would to remove the wheels and and re do all of the spacers be carefull to make sure that they a centered so dont tighten on nut fully then the next do them up equallyand slowly this will be tedious..... other then that do what I do man and just cop it on the chin
Then it would seem to be a case of poorly manufactured/out of balance Spacers and/or Wheel/Tyre combination.
