Just wondering, is there any benefit or is it possible to fit a later model Auto Transmission to the ZTT? Say a 5 speed RE5R05A? I understand that everyone says the Transmission is identical to a Patrol RE4R03A (GQ & GU) but what about the next model up? 5-speed RE5R05A? Or is the next model up completely utterly different such as physically, the wiring, computer, etc....... Impossible to fit. Just curious. Thx Peter
I did read (and post on this forum) some info about using the auto bell housing with the 6 speed internals manual from the 350z. It is an upgrade kit. A few members made comments about the 350z manual gearbox being less sturdy in a big power TT and less gear changing is better on turbo cars. Best upgrade for an Auto is the SAW. Maybe there is a better upgrade auto out there from one of the 4wds.
I'm aware of the 350z manual g/box option... and I too am of the opinion that less is more when it comes to the manual transmission update option. 5 gears is enough. BUT.... For the Auto Transmission, (for those of us who LOVE our autos) what about the next model up? Anyone know anything about it? Like.....is it that much different? Thinking better ratios, better low down power transfer and better economy perhaps on freeway. Peter
Last Zedfest I was talking to someone (possibly 90TTZ) and if I remeber he was saying to look at the USA scene, as the big power patrol builds are nuts over there with tough as nails autoboxes. So it may pay to look at the 4WD guys as they put there cars through some heavy use.
Have you considered beefing up your box ? I got my 403A done by mike at MV automatics , came back full manual valve body billet servo's Kevlar bands and a 3000 stall ... still drives on the freeway no probs .. shifts are hard as ... I should of done it years ago .. so nice to drive now
I left the hardcore 4x4 scene a many years ago now, and what I learnt from my patrols auto came straight into the 300zx auto's box I've posted links here in the past on what 'steps' to take an to what each 'step' will do.... member "MickW" (http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/member.php?u=9518) has also posted up great info aswell on the various mods which we discussed prior to his rebuild, the rebuild is also well documented. You know you have it right when people are horrified to see an auto stick in the console, especially after a hard run. I've even been offered a free 5spd manual conversion in exchange for my auto.... I did this in response => no way would I have an antique manual :br:
What shifter do you use if it's a full manual? The zed box is like the jap th400 lol Did they put more clutch packs in?
The shifter I use is a B&M pro rachet .. normal pattern shift and run a rocker switch to activate overdrive.... the shifter comes with heaps of different brackets to mount cable , ive pictured what I used On the box build I assume there are extra clutch packs in there , I told mike what I wanted and what power the car was making and going to make in the future and he rattled off what I needed
From memory I think it was about 3k all up for box , convertor and freight to and from nsw ... I'll have a dig around for the invoice
Yeah, that's what I reckon. 370z 7 speed should make our Z's fly and possibly provide even better fuel consumption. I have a feeling that give it another 5 or so yrs (once people figure out how to do the transplant) this might end up being the change over for our Z32's If it falls in the vicinity of a std g/box rebuild, then I don't see why not.
