Coilovers and Spring Rates

Ok, so been chasing a set of coilovers for my rebuild and was looking at a 7/5 spring rate on some HSD MonoPro's. All is well until I actually place the order and the disty kicks up a fuss saying that if I go 7/5 that they wont honour any warranty.

Now I am stickler for people claiming no warranty, I understand there are times where its applicable but too often see companies try to skip out on claims with crap like that. In any case I pushed the point, trying to find out why. Apparently their issue is that the TT weighs more so they will only do an 8/6. 7/5 is ok for an NA. Now it's right about here where I start to get annoyed because there are so many different configurations of Z32 that simply saying NA vs TT to me isn't good enough.

So in an effort in being completely open this is what I sent through. Weights based on good ol wikipedia but they are a starting point at least.

And their response was as follows.

Does this seem right? Is 7/5 really that much of an issue, not to mention that the UK Z32 guys did a group buy of HSD's not long ago. Oh and the UK HSD disty didn't seem to think there would be any issue. My concern is if I go too hard on the springs I am going to have serious troubles with engineering to get over the pits. I don't want to be out a bunch of cash having to go rebuild my stock struts just to get over pits.

I get that a TT has more weight, but 2+2 vs 2+0 changes things as well, and I am probably misunderstanding something but I was under the impression that the stock spring rates were even lower around the 2-3 mark. Granted it could make sense if it is indeed a very short stroke compared to others.

Anyone keen to fill me in? Am I wrong in my thinking? Am I missing something in how this all comes together?

yeah all that extra weight from the heavier gear box . LOL,

BTW those spring rates 7/5 are about perfect for a road going TT that you don't want to hard ride. So tell the to shove it and pick something else.

    just out of interest,
My Racing Logic coilovers has an 8/6 spring rate.
I find it way rough of a ride and the dampers are crap and i bounce all over the place. awesome at speed and sticks like all hell in tight corners but overall crap on tassie roads

is it feasible to have a coil over set at 6/4 like the stock springs are?
or am i dreaming, or is the 7/5 the best compromise, or do i need a better qulaity set of coils

they are saying the fronts have a short stroke so less travel than a normal dampner.

I don't see how 7/5 is going to give it that much more travel to bottom out.

8/6 doesn't bounce everywhere if your coilovers have good dampners.(and dampners have to be valved to match the spring rates )

But most of these cheaper coilovers don't.

    I don't see a problem with going 7/5 on those .

usually something goes wrong when the warranty is up anyway :p

This, if they have that little faith in their product and acknowledge design flaws but still try to sell them you probably don't want to deal with that company.

I'm assuming this is a street car, because once you hit the track, most warranties go out the window.

There are plenty of brands out there, and not that much difference between the cheaper price range. Is the distributor a suspension shop, or a general parts shop? It sounds like they might know from experience and the product is poorly designed. Perhaps ask then what brand they do recommend with that spring rate.

As for changing the rates, you can buy the springs from kings. You just need to tell them what internal diameter, free length and spring rate.

Yer mate, street car. Absolutely no warranty for track work.

I'm not actually buying through the disty so to speak, buying through another shop a friend runs as a side business. However the disty is the one kicking up a fuss. I know some people have issues with naming companies, but it's not hard to find. They are the only disty for HSD in Australia.

Their recommendation was just go get stock suspension, rego the car and swap it over. Which kinda defeats what I was asking them for, which was the 7/5's which are soft enough that I can get them engineered and permitted.

Just turning into a complete mess about.
