Gearbox rebuild and looking for new clutch

    Hi guys.

So after getting run over on my motorbike, it seems I need to get my zed build finished for some transport.

Currently, the engine is stuck and the auto gearbox has a bad leak... So I will drop out the transmission and swap with a manual. I have pretty much all the stuff for the swap... except a clutch (need some help choosing one) and I need to finish building the manual box.

So I have one of those lightened chrome moly flywheels and an alloy one piece drive shaft. Their seems to be heaps of cheap brands on ebay and a couple different types also. The car will be used for street and track like EC and autocross - but Im not interested in taking it to the drags. So what clutch would you guys recommend?

As for rebuilding the manual box - I have already stripped it. However the gears and bearings have not been pressed off... though I get the feeling that I kind of should considering that the box had next to no oil and was full of black crap. I don't know what condition the syncros are in... but should I replace these too? Is there like a kit or something that I can get that has all the gaskets/gromets/circlips etc that I'd need to get the job done? How much do you guys rekon I should expect to pay in parts alone?

    Cheers :D :br:

Just buy a new 2k spec box from CZP, less hassle and for the price you can't complain.

Umm for $1800 dollars, thats expensive... Especially considering that I already have a gearbox.

I'm not too worried about the hassle of swapping some parts of a gearbox that I have already stripped. If there are any specific wear indicators that I should be aware of things that usually wear/break but go un-noticed... a heads up would be much appreciated.

    thanks

It's not expensive when a gearbox rebuild usually runs to $1200 or so. Plus whatever you have already spent on this gearbox. The new box is much better option, believe me I've had both...

There's no shipping value in that summary, so I'd assume that price does not include shipping.
Also, I can't see the gaskets listed there. Generally I use gaskets where there is a tolerance that needs to be kept (with aviation goo to try seal the oil in), and RTV silicone on everything else.

Ah yes, shipping wasn't included... well spotted. My guess is it would probably be a hundred or so I'd imagine. Should be able to fit those parts in a small-ish box.

As for gaskets - I can only see one (front cover)... and I don't think its controlling a critical dimension. I'd imagine I would make my own paper gaskets as required. Gasket goop every where else :3

I don't think you can use the 97+ Syncro on a pre 97 gearbox. I also think the factory pilot bush is more reliable option than the needle bearing.

I was actually going to ask about that... that list was just to serve as a rough price.

Are you certain that the new syncros can not be used? not small revisions but major changes. If so where can you get the correct parts? my guess is they will be discontinued from nissan... and possibly out of stock.

Lastly, how does one ID their transmission? I dont remember seeing any tags or codes on the castings that I can remember... unless there are internal differences that are easily identifiable?

You can get a full generic rebuild kit off eBay for $350. I've got one sitting in my room for when I eventually get around to it.

Ebay kits eh? are they of reliable quality? unfortunately... I couldn't find any listed on ebay >.< link please?

At the moment, the engine is rusted stuck. I will try turning it over by hand soon when my transmission jack adapter comes in the mail... it squashed me last time haha... but I'm concerned I will need to rebuild the engine... i.e. fresh pistons, rings and hone... maybe turbo rebuild while I'm at it... can you please PM me some links ^^

There seems to be heaps of different suppliers... and all these so called "kits" seem to come with all sorts of different stuff. I'm a little worried about the quality of ebay junk and CZP prices are a little more expensive than nissanpartszone.com so I assume there is a better place to source these parts. Who is the go-to mob? I will make a parts list and get some prices from my local dealer to compare... but I'm no expert with cars. Motorbikes - I know the best suppliers from experience. So not wanting to get burned on cheap chinese ebay junk.

Andy: As for the '97+ spec baulk rings, according the web page (below) it states the older parts have been superseded by the '97+ spec part number, which is also the same part number listed on CZPs website.

    For example:

    Description: RING-BAULK 1ST
    Part Code: 32604+A

For under 250kw pretty much any clutch from a decent brand is fine, go stock, exedy, JWT, Valeo, RPS etc. Unless you have specific needs just stick with something full-face, organic and sprung.
Have you got a flywheel? You need to figure out if you have a TT or NA gearbox because they have different dimensions for flywheel clearance and starter motor mounting

I have a lightened chrome moly flywheel. It was recommended by other forum members on here:

    http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278609

I was thinking about a puck style clutch. It is only making stock power at the moment, but hopefully that will change soon.

I believe its a TT transmission. Is there a way in which I can check?

I'm not sure what the best way to check is, might have to do some googling. If your TT flywheel fits inside it then at worst you'll need a spacer for the starter motor.

How much power do want and what do you want it for? BlackBeast runs the Z1 twin plate which is fairly economical, some members run the usual six puck buttons and are happy with them. The other option is to call Jim Berry and get him to make one that suits you, he gets very good reviews.

I guess I'll do some googling.
To be honest, I dont really have a power figure that I'm aiming for... I guess I will keep modding stuff until I'm happy with it. But do you think its worth putting forgies in if I bother getting the engine out to re-hone? I'm sure its due for a major service anyway so I'm thinking its best to do it right the first time.
The cost of turbos on CZP are massive... Surely there are more cost effective ways? Whats the post popular/good bang for buck setup guys on here go for? To be honest, I don't really know that much about these cars and whats available and whats good or not etc.
