Faulty Speed Sensor Question

Preface: I've searched about this but am still not sure.

So I'm having this problem, where after about 15 mins of driving the speedo will drop down to 0 and usually the power steering will become stiff.

I've connected ECUTalk while driving and confirmed that the ECU also reads 0 when this happens. Note: It's not really intermittent... the first time I drive the car per day, the speed is fine...but once everything has warmed up, the speedo is toast and remains that way for the rest of the day. Odometer also stops working.

So, my first question is really just me seeking clarification. To me, this sounds like the speed sensor is to blame rather than the cluster solder points, as I believe the wiring goes Speed Sensor > ECU > Dash Console. Correct?

Secondly, I was thinking that the issue is related to this... (I can't really get under the car to check it out) thoughts?

Finally, anyone have a spare TT Manual speed sensor laying around?

    Cheers..

I was reading up on this this afternoon, it goes sensor > cluster > ECU so it could be the cluster, sensor or wiring in between

    Oh... damn. Thanks for that.

Dry joints on the back of the speedo can cause issues... Does your steering go heavy too?

Mostly, yes. I definitely notice it at 60km/h and that happened like clockwork on two occasions last week. But I've also noticed the steering ease up and stiffen again under continued driving, where the speedo (and odometer) has been 'off'.

Oh and just in case anyone was wondering, I've been using the GPS on my phone as a speedometer and mounting it on the dash, driving around 55km/h and following the traffic. It's not ideal, but as long as I avoid tunnels it works well enough.

Remove your cluster and re do the solder joints on the back of the speedometer. Will cost you nothing & strong chance it could be the cause of your issues.

Update: I resoldered the four main points on the back of the speedo (and one of the smaller points that looked a little weird).

Took it for a spin and the speedo wasn't working at first, until I got to around 50km/h and it came good. I drove for about 1.5km and the speedo stopped again and didn't come back on.

The steering wasn't heavy, but I don't know if that's a sign of anything in particular.

I'm no soldering expert, but the other points didn't look that bad. I think I'm going to need to get under the car and have a look.
