    Hi guys
having issues with a sticky valve. Tried flushing the motor out and using engine flush ect. Still gets stuck everytime I go over 3,000rpm. Had bad knocking yesterday when it happened. Hope I havnt bent or done damage. Anyone know how much to fix it? can do myself. Or would the cost be not worth it? Just get a new motor ect.
    Cheers

Depends on if there is any other damage and you won't now until the head comes off. Have you identified which valve it is yet?

its no1 piston. It did it the other day taking off at the lights and was making a loud knocking noise. So hope it wasnt the piston slaping it or something. Knocking hasnt come back since tho. Just the bad miss. Then comes good after about a min.

I remember it used to be a little noise in the heads on cold start up but that was just till the oil circulated a bit then it was fine after about 5 sec. But I put that down to dry noisy lifters.

How do you know it is the valve sticking, you described it as knocking? it you had the mechanical clash it would not come and go. Could it be something else?

Do you get the same symptoms over 3000rpm in neutral as when driving? I'm thinking if you don't get the knocking in neutral it's probably something else like detonation, fuel or timing.

Hi max. Yes it still makes a little noise when on a cold start and it dose go away after it warms up a little and once oil gets through the motor. Well I thought at first it was only the coil packs due to it missing over 3,000rpm then comes good. But I thought it would be a sticky valve due to it back firing from the right bank of the engine. It only knocked that one time when taking of at the lights and it stayed knocking after I pulled over to check it out. So strange. But since then it dosnt knock but runs very ruff like its running on 5cyl when it starts playing up. It did it every now and then when I got the zed but since the other day it happens all the time now. Like this morning when sitting over night it started as soon as it started her up but went away after a min. But yes you could be right about the timing. It could of jumped a tooth and put the timing out maby? But then if the timing was out it would miss continuesly?

If you suspect a valve problem.
Compression test & bore scope inspection.

Yeah ill have to do that. Ill try that sea foam stuff tomorrow and that crome molly engine cleaner aswell. If that dosnt fix it ill have to do a compression test on her. Cheers for all the help.

I take it you don't have the laptop and consult I passed on with the car. That would be helpful. I suspect an electrical fault. I can't remember if I put on a series 2 ptu, do you know, check under the nose panel. Rectangular is series 1 and prone to failures, series 2 is kind of hexagon shaped.

Also how did you determine it's cylinder 1?

Yes I didnt get the laptop and consult with the car : ( would of been really handy and usefull. Ill have to check and see what ptu it is. I only thought it was no1 cyl because I put my ear as close to the rocker cover as I could and the noise was coming from the no1 cyl. I did the old screw driver trick aswell and put it all along the right bank and still only got that noise when I held it to number 1 cyl. Im going to autobarn soon and getting some upper head cleaner and some engine treatment to see if it un sticks the valve. Im sure it is a valve only due to it back firing from the right exhaust. So ill let you all know soon if it works. And ill check if the ptu is series 1 or 2.

I think it was a series 1 from memory, sucks you are having these problems now, I never had anything like this go wrong with it . only that bloody starter motor! ,let us know how you go with with the cleaner and flush today , if it is a stuck valve like you suspect that should clear it up .

Lets hope its not electrical .

oh and I didn't get the laptop and consult either haha, but I bought one from a forum member here not long ago for 50 bucks , great investment and works will all nissans!

Well great news : ) I did the head cleaner and engine flush and it fixed it! drove it all day yesterday and went fine. So it was a sticking valve. Thanks everyone for your help. Got a bunch of great people on here.

Well I think you werr right max. Im sure its the ptu. I looked up the symptoms of a stuffed ptu and its the same problems what im having now. Not bad for 200,000km. Its lasted well haha. So if anyone has a ptu. Preferably a series 2 let me know. Cheers guys

I used that crome molly engine clean treatment and upper head spray cleaner.

I've checked my old posts and it should already have a series 2 PTU, it may have been second hand though. I would try an swap with someone to confirm that it is the problem, also check the contacts are clean and working properly, then if it is the PTU get a new one from Coz in the US. http://conceptzperformance.com/Cart...r_Type=NIS300&UID=20140422141509203.41.32.130
only $120 plus postage and that wouldn't be much.

That's good news it helped get rid of the noise temporarily, could just be carbon around the seats - hence the engine cleaner can be a good thing - a long run around locally can also help clean it out with the odd boot of power here and there (making sure its fully warmed up). Just because you had a noise doesn't mean you have done damage or that you need to do bore-scopes and / or compression tests etc. (sometimes I think some go overboard a bit with it and want you to almost strip your motor in testing ) It (noises) can often happen to motors that don't get a good run and are stopping and starting all the time.

Keep an eye on it - if it comes back again - it could be an indication that your oil brand or viscosity is not quite right. Don't go off what people tell you - I have found that sometimes the same individual engine can just go better with a different type or viscosity regardless of what others are doing well with.

You will have to get rid of that S1 PTU sooner or later though!

Good luck and happy motoring! :)
