interior finish idea

Has anyone seen, tryed or thought of doing this.

Had an idea this morning to pull off all the tweed on my interior. Put some sort of finish over it to smooth it out again (eg. Fibre glass but I'm sure there's something better) then painting that to re finish the inside?

I thought of doing matte black. Only because my tweed looks a little tired and I think a plain matte finish would be nice. Thoughts on it?
If anyone has done something like this I'd love to gear some success stories.

If I give it a go I'll post pics and what not on my success/troubles. Just unsure if it will look cheap and nasty or not.

 

Would look wicked if you could smooth it out and paint the same as the outside.

 

You might find the panels are already smooth underneath the trim.


For god sake don't paint them the same colour as the exterior! Such a ricer!

anyways has anyone seen anything like this done before? If something required some extra thickness any hints as to what I should use? I was thinking a thin layer of fibre glass. Like one of those fibreglass kits you can get. then sand it down nice and smooth and paint.

And I'm not into the rice soooo much so it would be a black i think. something inconspicuous compared to a bright yellow to match the exterior

Don't think I've ever seen "smoothed" panels... I'd suggest to save money and time just strip the tweed off, clean the "crusty bits" off and apply some soft vinyl in place of the tweed. Is say it'll look better and if fine correctly will last longer.

I can see the paint either getting shiny patches (if matte) or scratched looking (if gloss). Even in black I'd say the smoothed approach is a bit rice. Just my opinion

that's kinda what I was thinking. I might try and find a scrap panel off someone and test it. See how if turns out. That way I haven't stuffed anything on my car worst case I just save and do it properly with some new material

 

Mate if you want to do something no zed down here I know has done then paint the panels .

use a fabric dye on the tweed

Just use a fabric dye (spray on) to make the tweed look new black and clean.
If you don't like that, then try out that idea of fibre glassing it smooth.

You could try a carbon fibre look, you could try painting the tweed to make it one colour and then clearcoat to try and make it look like fibre glass/ carbon fibre. It probably won't look like it.

Fabric dye is a good idea. The plan is this now. Find two panels as donors. Whatever they might be. Try dyeing one of them and painting the other. I'll post results and decide from there thanks for the advise guys.

Well i've started painting panels matte black (spare parts i got from Jinxed)
Paint job doesn't look too back. I've had practice on my motorbike haha
The question is though how will it look inside a car... I will put pics up soon. stay tuned

 

Seen this done to a few ugly civics. The dash, shifter and doors were fiberglassed and 2 PAC sprayed.

Reminded me of how old cars had steel dashboards.

Can't see it working for a zed but prove me wrong.

Always wondered how it would hold up long term..

 

Just gave me an idea to carbon fiber wrap mine. Actually doesn't 3M make some sort of carbon wrap?

 

They sell it in super cheap. Funnily enough its expensive. Heat activated too.
