Can anyone spare a few tips on getting engine and transmission to mate up easily? No matter what I do I can't seem to get it to align correctly. A/T by the way. Any tricks?
in or out of the car mate. I have done mine ion the car each time, that is I leave my tranny and pull the engine on its own(auto as well). I make sure that the spigot and the input shaft are clean. The transmission is supported, the front end is on axle stands with the crossmember dropped as much as it will. lower the engine in with am engine crane and it seams to go fine. I normally have 2 people 1 operating the engine crane and 1 guiding the engine down.
Take one of the gearbox to engine mounting bolts, go down to a nut & bolt shop & buy two bolts with the same thread pitch only longer. You want to be able to cut the heads off the bolts & have about 75mm to 100mm of shank available. Screw them into a couple of the holes in the block, the further apart the better. You can use these as removable pins to help support & align the box. You want to be able to get them out once you reinstall the original bolts, so don't put them up the top of the block or anywhere where getting them out will be a problem.
Cheers guys, think I have it right now, hoping I've bolted the flex plate on the right way as when I look through the starter motor window, it seems that the plate teeth seem too far forward to match up with the teeth on the starter... Cheers
the starter doesn't engage the plate, it comes forward on to the plate when it spins up and retracts when it disengages.
Cheers, my plate doesn't look far enough back to even be caught by the starter, thinking I might have bent it trying to line it up..
Cant really see from your photo ( I even tried to photo shop it so I could see some detail) You either have the plate in backwards ( though I cant see how) OR the box isn't mounted correctly and pushed all the way forward.. Either way you are going to need to pull the box again and find WTF is wrong.
i will tell you what is wrong to torque converter has not been fitted to the box properly it needs to be rotated and pushed into the box further as it is it hasn't engaged the pump in the auto properly and has pushed the flex plate forward hopefully you have not damaged the auto rod
Thanks rod- any tricks to getting the invertor to engage properly? I've remounted the tranny with a new flex plate as the old one was doing it's best banana impression. Looks like exactly the same thing has happened. This is starting to get on my nerves. The plate now sits out about 4mm further than the last one did.
You have to fit the T/C up to the gearbox first, then rotate it and you will find the cutouts on the shaft will engage the transmission in one spot as you rotate it. It then pushes right in. pushing it right home centralizes the T/C so the spigot can engage the end of the crank properly.
Thanks Tekky, after speaking to one of the lads at work I've realised I have to fit it to G/B first, he says there is a possibility I may have buggered the pump by forcing it on (with enough force to bend the flex plate, is there any way to tell if I have before trying to install the correct way?
