Hey guys the Z is going to the panel beater tomorrow to R&R a new wing and tidy up a few cosmetic things that are well overdue.

Question is, does any trim need to be removed on the hatch in order to remove the wing. It is the 1990 OEM type wing.

If yes, I prefer to remove the trim myself to avoid any accidental damage by the panel beater and also cut down on labour cost, that would be a bonus;)

    Any ideas?

sure does all the plastic should be removed.
as some of the spoiler fixings are under there.
good time to check for rust as well.

Yep, all the trim at the end of the hatch. Couple of nuts under there that have to come off. Bastard of a thing to remove the OEM wing though

OK. so the trim under the hatch has to come off.

I will visit that tonight and see how much fun it will be.
Thought that a panel beater would be in a better position to remove the wing instead of myself. But the trims perhaps I might be able to do.

Don't worry Karl, a fibreglass version of the OEM wing is going back on:D
The original wing has lifted at one edge and has hail stone marks from years ago. So a replacement is well overdue. Also painting the rear bar because the paint has come off in some areas exposing the yellow polyurethane? especially at the bottom where the wheels are flicking little rocks and debris on it and sandblasting it. So to prevent this from happening again in the future, a set of the OEM moulded rear mudflaps will be going on and they will be colour coded to match the cars paint.

And finally the car is getting re-badged.
The OEM 'NISSAN FAIRLADY Z' and 'TWIN TURBO' stickers will go on the rear spoiler. And....'NISSAN' sticker will be going on the front fascia as per original.

    I cant wait....It will look AWESOME.:D:zlove::zlove:

Yes as others have said......just did this last week. Even took photos to write a quick tech article but haven't had time. Will try to post some pictures later. Can't do it from phone.

    Here's a quick reference....

There is double sided tape (shown in photo below). You need to get a blade under the edge of the spoiler and cut through it. Start at the tip and work your way in slowly. There also 4 plastic lugs along the spoiler. One at each end and one at 1/3 and 2/3 the way along. You can see them just with a light from under the hatch if you look through the frame, but I don't do anything with them from there so cut them off. You can see where I've cut through one in the second photo. Not sure what others have done but mine didn't want to budge so I found slicing through them with a good blade made the job easy.

The most important part are the 2 screws behind the plastic trim. I couldn't see them at first as they are tucked up and in.....see below circled in green.

Will visit the panel beater tomorrow to see how it's going. To make sure there are no issues getting it off.

Easiest way (after removing the bolts) is to buy some fishing wire, (the cable stuff) make a couple handles, wrap the wire around the handles, hook it under one corner n make a sawing type motion back n forth. Cuts straight through the plastic clips n sikaflex ;-)

    Thank you guys.
I left it up to panel beater to remove after showing them the clips and the 4 screws. It should be OK. Also not keeping the existing OEM wing so if it get damaged upon removal no love loss. It's going in the bin anyway.

So long as no screwdrivers or pry bars are used, someone had on my car then covcered it with the VS wing, once I removed the wing I had a huge job knocking out dents and sorting the thing. Infact my car in general has not had a single panel that was a straight rub for paint, I wish I knew this before I started.
