Problems with 362rwkw forged engine

I bought this 362rwkw fully forged engine with what was said to be a small head gasket leak on No 3 cyl above 5000rpm causing it to miss. This engine was originally built by UAS, but I have since learnt that it has been to multiple workshops since.

I have stripped the engine and found the following:-

On the RH inlet cam the rebuilt BDE cam gears were seized onto the camshaft. The outer sleeve of the cam gear looks as though it has been dropped and distorted, then forced onto camshaft. The cam gears would not been able to operate and it has badly scored the reground camshaft.

The ARP head studs were not fully screwed into block, by up to 16mm in one case.
The large Nissan load spreading washers that fit between the ARP washers and the head had been omitted on all studs. This has allowed the ARP washers to embed themselves in the head, causing significant damage.

The two small 6mm head bolts (one on each head) were not high tensile bolts and had been cross threaded into block. Probably because the head wasnt square and had been tightened down prior to trying to install these bolts

Neither cylinder head had locating dowels fitted!

RH turbo compressor outlet nozzle had a stripped thread allowing it to leak badly under pressure.

I found no evidence of a head gasket leak on No 3 cyl. Although Cometic gaskets gaskets had been used. Evidence that the engine had been running very rich for a long time, all cylinders and spark plugs were equally gummed/sooted up.

Once again, I am not complaining, when you buy sight unseen, you take a chance.
In my view there is no way this was the way UAS built this engine, it has been worked on by less competent people.
I hope other forum members can learn as I have from this.

I am happy to answer any questions relating to this engine

Sorry to hear Martin. Having said that, there was numerous threads by the seller having shitfights with UAS over the build, and was known the 2 parties had a falling out and seller took the engine elsewhere before UAS had a chance to fix the issues.

We don't do this sort of work. I think you will find it has something to do with the backyarder or ? workshop who removed the engine, which was not ASR,MRC or UAS. Neither one of us have seen the car for years.

Can't imagine any reasonable mechanic 'building' an engine like that, sounds like a rough home job. Bad luck, Martin, finding a good engine builder is not easy in Q.

He bought it second hand from a guy in Sydney knowing it had problems. Finding a good builder is easy, just have to convince Eric to do it :p

I dont have a problem fixing any of these problems, Eric has been good enough to give me a lot of info. I'm with you Richard, I cant imagine any reasonable mechanic doing this, hence the thread on the forum.

You can have problems with these older cars, raising their performance to the levels we expect today. This can happen but at least we expect a reasonable level of competence no matter who is chosen. This case does not meet those expectations.

I'd love to know the workshops it has been to though.
Just to avoid them absolute general

Martin, that is one horrific experience .. shame on whoever the seller was .. a swindle.

Consider the possibility that the seller had no idea regarding the extent of the issues the engine had. If they knew what they were doing, they probably would have grown tired of having the engine at multiple shops and had a crack themselves. Plus, what workshop/backyarder would advertise their incompetence? Easy to hide when everything is bolted up.

Perhaps .. however, I will retain my healthy cynicism.

It appears that "Caveat emptor" remains true to this day regardless of whether the seller is honest/ dishonest or not even aware themselves of the products integrity.

Stories like this reinforce this more than ever

Today I worked on the turbos GT28rs that came with the engine,

Found that RH turbo air inlet had a huge air in leak at the adapter plate. A too long a bolt was used and pressed against the turbo housing forcing the adapter plate away from the turbo, this had been bogged to some extent with gasket sealant.

On the compressor outlet, two of the three bolts on the adapter plate had stripped threads, it would have leaked badly under any pressure.

Water line to RH turbo was virtually plugged, probably because the engine had been stood around for a while AND delivered to me full of rusty water, no inhibitor at all!

LH turbo had two oil restrictors in the oil line, RH one did not have any.

I would be surprised if this engine even ran and that is why it had been removed.

Just gets better and better. Perhaps Danny might be able to shed some light on who was last to touch the heads etc...
Good luck with getting it all sorted, Martin.

It has been worth the $4500 just to find out how many things you can do incorrectly if you have zero mechanical aptitude. But how much do you need? I'm an ex male model and hairdresser ( I have done some sheep shearing) and with the assistance of Eric & Chrispy in particular and other forum members I muddle through. Yes this engine was originally rebuilt by UAS five years ago, the issues I have raised i believe have nothing to do with UAS. I was not told the whole truth by the seller, but he can live with that I hope.

Really? From what I remember of shearers from working as a go-fer in the woolsheds while mum was sorting wool not many of them seemed the type to let people live with scamming them...

Maybe the modeling brings out your forgiving side.

Anyway, hope you get it sorted.

Sounds like many incompetent hands have been on the engine since the initial dispute

Hope it doesn't cost too much to sort out.:zlove:

Sounds like you had 3 great jobs

Often with these cars you pretty much have to assume worst case scenario when looking to purchase anything.

Most of the things Martin has listed are a pretty common find over here sadly - except for the locating dowels being missing THAT would raise some eyebrows!

The use of the wrong length and/or pitch thread bolt is standard practice for some people it seems.

None Zed related but I kid you not I had a Kia I was asked to fix that had jumped a few teeth on the cam belt after a "mechanic" friend of the family had changed the belt for them. The car ended up being written off as when I started to take things apart I found he didn't have the tools to undo some of the internal wrenching bolts so literally smashed parts off the motor with a hammer!!!!

Lol this is bullshit I've been up front and honest the whole time about this motor who worked on it how we found the issue. I'm not like that, any one that has meet me or had any dealings with me would tell you that.

I'm pretty fkn furious I've been made out to be the bad guy. I haven't even read all posts Before i had to wright some thing.
That is your work John.! engine hasn't even done 5000ks and you should of fixed it under warranty like I asked, but you refused I got legal advise for that and I was told It would be very hard to get anything because it's a performance motor even though it was built for that purpose It voids everything you even told me this your self.
*remember my old motor that was built by drc was scraped because it was over bored 60th over recommendations the one you throgh out before I Evan had a chance to look at it I was that young and dumb I didn't picked up on your lies back then.*
And the exhort that were brand new although it was not fit for purpose because of the 90 bends in rear section it still cost me 2k you throgh that out also "apparently".*
I sell my rebuilt auto gearbox UAS build after 4000ks to dotdot on forum in Melbourne he instals it, it blows he gets it pulled apart to find that it had that much wear it was impossible that it was rebuilt 4000ks ago just so happens wizard sold his old UAS rebuilt auto box around same time funny that. It all comes together now when I'm older more mature not as naive.

Now with the motor I sold to Martin UAS built installed motor build an auto gearbox for it tuned it with a microteh first piggy backing auto computer never ran correctly because of the ecu not communicating with auto computer had idle issues car would cut out at traffic lights if i didn't keep the revs up. so he suggested we go nistune added afm tuned it again ran ok auto changed at right rpms, but It still had hunting idle issues and a hesatation at hi rpm which got worse worse and eventuated into a miss fire sent my car back to resolve these issue at least 8 to 9 time minimum 1-2weeks each and every time which didn't bother me it was my weekender but after 8-9 times. at this time i was fed up with there failed attempts to resolve the issues and wanted to do a manual conversion also, I was referred to Andrew at ASR to do convertion and problem solve these issues UAS couldn't fix so it was sugested I buy a new Aaiv valves, tps, air regular, CAS, split fire coil packs to fix the issues probably went over board but I just didnt want it fixed with no issues so i figured i buy every thing new and a shit load of new parts for the convertion all from z1. That was all done by ASR.
Then I sent it to Mark at MRC accross the road from ASR both the owners of these company's are ex-UAS employes that gave UAS the good reputation they had. So Mark firstly noticed motor had no knock sensor or o2 sensors so we installed them we also Instaled a Selin kit with 2 AFMs but couldn't fit afm and pods behind fmic Mark also suggested I did away with the nistune go vipec v88 ecu because it can run map so i can do away with afm and fit twin pods behind fmic and it can be more fine tuned for the power I had and for future turbo upgrade next year I was planing on doing. So we did the vipec tried tuning it but it still had a miss fire at hi rpm.
After trying different spark plugs and other things, Mark pulled spark plugs out and shined a torch down onto pistons to find #3 piston clean not like the other 5 pistons this is how we come to the conclusion that it was a leak in head gasket or warped head. So John from UAS went to Andrews to inspect he had come to the same conclusion and bright another one to the table. what if it's a cracked head who pays for that he said. I suggested whether it is or isn't cracked head I'll pay for parts he just supply's labor I thought that was more than reasonable as the motor has done less than 5000ks including all the ks it's done on the dyno being tuned.
John refused to contribute at all.*
I threatened to talk to department fair trading he laught said you'll never win because Ive taken the car to ASR and MRC and it's a performance motor dosn't come with warranty. My legal advice said the same thing, I had no legs to stand on other than to cut my losses. I was originally going to send this motor to epRacing in texas USA to be rebuilt but cost of importing taxes dutes out weighed starting off fresh with supplyed motor over there so that was what I have done.
Motor manual gearbox was removed from car by a local mechanic with my help done free of charge because I did a bit of drainage work at his house as a favor so he returned the favor and is a family friend at no time any one removed the heads since rebuild.*
Motor was in a drivable state when removed from car even drove it to mechanics to remove motor.
Sorry it's a long and painful story try living it.*but I'm made out to be the bad guy when I'm the one that has been unfairly ripped off in many ways cost of that motor and money spent to get it to run correctly far far exceeds the price it was sold for.
I was unaware of the things Martin has come across and the vibe I got from Martin over the phone was that it was an easy fix and I was happy to hear that for him he has also asked for engine number # which was loosed during the block getting machined and it was a block supplied by UAS so I have no power in chasing that up, something I nagged him for ages apparently it was out of a half cut. He said I could stamp my number on it but I never did because he told me it wasn't going to be an issue for rego or illegal! So I didn't bother.*
But martin has brought to my attention "it is illegal to sell or use an engine without a no# *
    What do you do there?*
