hi guys as we know our temp switch turns on at 90 degrees ,

i would like one that turns on at about close to 80 degrees , do we know if any of the skyline ones start at around 80 degrees ,

i would more like a replacement unit , so basicly take the 90 out and put an 80 in there ,

    what can we do?
    thanks guys

could this possible be changed with a resistor? total noob electrical man myself but someone with a tad more knowledge may know.

    Confused??

Alex, do you mean a switch for the termo fan?? What do you mean by temp switch??

If its a case of wanting the thermo fan to come on earlier, you can do this with either a Nistune board, or with a Romulator which is what I'm running. With the Romulator, I can program the ECU at will and change things as I wish... I have my thermo fan to come on at 85 degrees with aircon on, and 90 degrees with aircon off, depending on whether the car is moving or at idle...

Yep. Thats what it for. The temp switch is the 2 wire switch that sits on the water pipe at the front of the car the one on the left. That's the one I want to change to 80 degree I no that motomoshi. Or whAtever have them. I want a simple set up non controllable.
The thermo will be running of that switch. No added stuff on the car. It will work well.

Reading the posts so far, it sounds like the ECU controls the threshold to switch.
The sensor will send its signal.
If you want to modify the signal to fool the ECU into thinking that the sensor is reading a higher temp than it is, then you might lookup variable resistor or potentiometer.

The ecu reads on off. Not numbers.

    Well yes and no.

The temp sensors in the front pipe change in resistance and create a voltage curve/ramp that the ECU reads, the ECU is also programmed at what point it takes that reading or any other input for that matter and effects outputs based on the programming of the ECU.

As Jedi said it can be manipulated by changing these settings, with a Nistune board and software or a romulater. It can also be done by having a custom chip made, same as lifting the speed limit to 510 kph, it still reads the input speed the same way but doesnt give you the alarm output till 510 kph.

But I dont think you are running OEM ECU, AM ECU will have all manor of inputs to get information and outputs to do the bidding of the ECU setup.

You mention that you want something simple, a switch, power and a fan, the switch probably wont have contacts rated to the required current (amps) as fans can pull 30A plus, a small amount of work has to be done working out what current the fan will pull, then use a switch to operate a relay with contacts rated above the fans draw. That is about as simple as you will get it.

Something you need to consider is the switch hysteresis, what this means after the switch throws at 80C what does it do ? Does it switch off at 79.9C ? if it did it could be a strobing setup, on off on off, not what you want, some temp switches will stay on for a set time or a temperature.

This one switches at 80C and resets at 75C approx.

You will see it has NO (normally open) contacts, thats what you want, when the contacts close it will operate the relay and in turn run the fan until temp drops to about 75C.

    I hope this helps.

    hhhmmmmm ok ,,

well i might ring up bob the tuner and see what we can do ,,

i want it fully auto at about 80 degree, , ill look into it more and see how i go .

He will either do what Jedi said or use facilities in the AM ECU (notsure what you have) or use a stand alone controller.

Something like these or something in between.

Also I believe the high end Auto Metre, Elite series and Sport Comp II series temp gauges have an output on them called "Pro Control" that can be used for this sort of thing also.

You could also be fully hektik and run a manual switch on the dash. :p

In case you are doing days of thunder spec.

Yeah that would be mad lol

    I just spoke to bob.

It can be done the way I want it. Fully auto
He knows how to do it so all good.

There will be another 16" fan at the front of the rad as well but manual. Just in case.
It should work out really well once this is all done.

Yeah, reading the replies your over complicating a pretty simple thing.

If you have a TT with the 2-stage thermo fan, on your eprom you have values for low-speed, high-speed, low-speed threshold and high-speed threshold. If your wanting to adjust when your factory thermo switches on/off then just adjust these values to suit, or if you want to run a thermo instead of the clutch fan, then disconnect your low speed wire from your front thermo and run your +ve for your thermo off that. You already have the relay and the temp sensors in place, and the switching gear in the ECU.

You can adjust these with nistune if you have it, or if you just want it added to a bin it can be done with tunerPRO easily enough.

This is how I had my thermo fan setup on the red zed, which is now in Jamies hands.

Just run the aircon and you have the other fan cut in anyway :)

    No....

the thermo fan does not automatically come on with the aircon. By default, it is temperature and speed related. Simply switching on the aircon, will not activate the thermo fan.

    Mitch Has one gear: GO

Although I used nistune to set the aux fan to come up at hi speed when the car was at operating temp (80 degrees C), and the AC switch was ON.
It can be done, and is simple to do, but does not work that way from factory.

This can easily be achieved though -just a matter of bridging wires

did this on mine. Put a Diode bridge between the Air Compressor clutch wire and the Aux fan Hi-speed wire. Make sure the diode stripe is at the AC Clutch end.

Bit of heatshrink over the body of the diode first will protect it. Leave enough leg length to solder (about 5mm), and make sure you mark its orientation first.

an 80 degree cut-in temp will mean it's running pretty much all the time once you reach operating temps
