    Hey
trying to replace me aftermarket steering wheel (original was the series 3 airbag wheel) but the car came with an aftermarket and boss adaptor.

I have a series 2 with the cruiz buttons, but the steering shaft just doesn't seem long enough for this wheel?

I was hoping somebody has a pic of behind the wheel looking at the steering column. There's not even any contacts on mine that rub on the back of the s/wheel??

    Something's not right/missing

    I'm about to give up....

...there's a big difference between the airbag & non-airbag steering wheels. I'd be putting an airbag steering wheel back on there or just leaving the aftermarket steering wheel in place.
The airbag version steering column covers are shorter than the non-airbag steering column covers & this is mostly due to the 'spiral cable' assembly which sits ahead of the airbag steering wheel.
Will post some pics if it helps.

Got the series 2 wheel on, the column cover wasn't screwed on properly and fouled the s2 wheel. I just need the series 2 block with the brushes to fit the steering wheel.

It a appears what mine is missing is the steering wheels brush connection/assembly that screws onto the white block with the indicator handle etc... The steering shaft goes through the centre of it. Without it the horn and cruise buttons have no connection.

Does any body know what it's called lol?

I need one ASAP for series 2 cruis control steering wheel.

    Cheers, ian

Its called many things depending on car manufacturer but its generally referred to as an earth contact plate by most - sometimes the word brush is inserted if it has a brush in it but the 300zx doesnt (the brush is in the other part)

Steering Wheel Earth Contact plate/ Horn Earth Contact Plate

This is called a "clock spring"
Also to note on all 3 of the 300s that i have owned none of them have had a brass contact plate, they all had clock springs. the were all 89 models if i remember correctly, all had cruise and hicas. I actually have an old rusted clock spring here (if i can find the camera later i will take some pics) but just looking at it it there are 4 screw mounting holes on the corners, the centre bit that turns has the hall sensor wheel on the back for the hicas and on the front has a socket for a 3 pin plug. I keep hearing about these brass contact plates and am now wondering what were the differences in models i.e why do some have contact plates and why do some have clock springs?

Yeah what u have describes is exactly what I need as my steering wheel recently purchased is off an 89 model. I think people best describe this item as a brush/ring assembly but probably has different names

That's the part. What ever the 300zx uses for an aus spec 89 cruis control steering wheel (no hicas)
Is defiantly what I need. If anybody out there has one Iv posted in the wanted section. I can't blueslip without it lol...

Thanks for your help in identifying this part.

I think that answers my question then, the hicas wheel would be awefully hard to attach to the shaft or wheel without it being in its own unit so im assuming that the hicas equipped cars use the clock spring that i pictured and the non hicas use the brass contacter plates that you pictured.

I think you might be right, looks like fabrication might be involved.
