Probably a stupid question, but gearstick bushings.

My gearstick seems wobbly and doesn't know where the gears are itself. The clutch and such is fine. My guess is the bushing on below the gearstick has gone, should I just take it to a tranny place? Or attempt repairs myself? What parts do I need?

    easy fix

get brass ones for 15 bucks, really easy to replace if you can get your car off the ground a bit (ramps, stamps, floor jack) also you might want to consider getting a shifter rebuild kit for 30 odd bucks and while your at it replace all the stock clutch metal hard lines with a one pieve braided hose.

drawing on the old memory tanks here, but you shouldn't need to get underneath the car to replace the shifter bushings. Theres one bolt which is designed to make life difficult, but if your willing to sacrifice a ring spanner you can cut the spanner and get to it from the top, and then once it's out, you can put it back in the other way round.

Andy's right, you can do it from inside the car, but you need little girly hands like mine. I did it without cutting any spanners too. To do it from the bottom you have to remove the exhaust and cat heat shield if it's still there. If it's not you might be able to get your hands around.

No question is ever " Stupid " , if in doubt ask otherwise you end up looking stupid when you screw it up.

As a couple of the other guys have said if you can get your hands in thru the top, you can do it that way. Personally i'd go via underneath and while your under there you can check connections etc to make sure everything is all good, kill two birds with one ROCK.

Well i've done it in a Z31, taking the shifter out, it's just a matter of finding replacement parts.

Yeah, I just assumed he might have lady-pleasing man-hands like me.

I remembered now lol...I used one of the 10mm ratchet ring spanners from bunnings. Cut it a little short to fit in the space and with a bit off added leverage to get it started, it worked fine.

Which way was the correct way to put the bolt back in Andy to make it easier for future replacements?
I jus replaced my shifter bushes now while I did my conversion I'm sure I won't have to do it again any time soon.

The front bolt that hold the shifter bracket in place is reversed for whatever retarded reason and the nut and washer are underneath. The other one is fine, but not this one...

Anyhow, on putting it all back together just reverse it so the nut and washer are on the top rather than on the bottom...it's a no brainer really, it's that much of a b!tch to get off, I have no idea how you'd put it back on.
