anyone ever thought of doing this?

i know it was discussed a while ago but nothing ever eventuated

was thinking of sitting it portrait and covering up both slots and the clock..

than running it though a cakewalk by roland
    http://www.cakewalk.com/media/PDF/UA-1G.pdf

and then into a sound processor, weather digital or analogue.

this would than give me control over the music without loosing any quality, maybe even gaining.

would it fit? i havent test fitted the ipad, but it would be set up so the ipad would slide in and sit on a 30pin dock, when the car is parked i could slide it out and take it with me...

think its doable? should it be done?

this could also allow me to hook the ipad up to that consult thing via bluetooth.. but than an app would need to be made... or has it already been done?.....

Stupid idea. Huge amount of time and money, and what do you get? Something way more advanced next to the rest of the interior. You'll ruin it.

I think it is a great idea...i actually was looking into this last week...aazn if you are going ahead with this, i would like to get it done aswell

It could be used to have ecutalk or conzult or carpc...it doedn need to be an ipad...it could be a hp thinksmart (think thats the name)...it mainly only needs to be basically 7" in size and be like a computer where you will be able to run apps :)

If the Ipads have GPS, (not cell assisted) it would be awesome.

I'd use a carPC personally with a frontend like roadrunner or similar. Easier HDD upgradeability, less limitations on applications, more options for touchscreens, etc.

Though I did think this was pretty good.

Awesome idea. Then apple can charge you evetytime you filk up with petrol, make the app store the only place you can get mods and parts for your car, and make you buy a whole new car every time they do a minor upgrade :)

I had a carpc with a touch screen running centrafuse. IMO a big headache and probably wont do it again.

Last time I checked, a bluetooth or WIFI app is possible for OBDI, but doesn't exist.

I have an iPad (which i'm selling at the moment), but I used it mainly for music through a headunit (with iPod control) and GPS navigation.

I can offer a tip here though, if you are going to get an iPad, be aware that only the 3G has GPS. You may need a 3G sim for that to work correctly, or at least efficiently, as iDevices use mobile towers to determine a vague location before GPS narrows it down.

However, you can still get GPS working on a WIFI only iPad if you do the following...

    - Buy a cheap Bluetooth GPS receiver. I bought a keychain one from eBay which works really well and has an internal battery that charges over USB.

    - Jailbreak the iPad and install Bluetooth GPS from Cydia.

Once that's done, you can go ahead and install any GPS app for your iPad.

It's a lot of extra effort, but if you don't intend on using 3G data, a 64GB WIFI only iPad is dramatically cheaper than the 3G one.
