Could a 300 be made to handle close to or as well as 4wd turbos like Skyline/EVO etc

sliding across 4 lanes into traffic as the rear end tries to become the front end is always great fun :), keeps you awake.

Yeah i thought this would be the ultimate conclusion from every one that we fight a losin battle . . . do evos really handle that good ? Crispy what makes you drive the zed every where but to work if they are since good? Think i will have ti head to haberfield on the week end to test drive one and see what the hypes about . . . worried i might come back zed less though lol and with a evo

They are good, but they are not involving to drive. They do it too effortlessly, full noise exiting a corner in an evo just...goes. Full noise exiting a corner in a zed...yeah, bring on turbo lag. :br:

I was going to buy a new Audi S3 last year and Audi gave it to me for a weekend to test drive. Gobs of power, almost impossible to get out of shape, exhorbinately fast...but at the end of the day, it was no challange. Brake, paddle shift down, turn in, floor it, no probs.
zed - brake, down through the gears, turn in, tyres scrub a little, a little lift off at the rear, feather the throttle, drive through the corner, full noise, little wiggle at the back, tyres grip, nose up, away we go!

Andy pretty much summed it up. Evo handles better than anything I've ever driven. The only thing that has gotten away from me on the mountains was a evo 9 on semis. stupid fast, but feels like a small cheap sedan that the engineers had free reign over. The zed feels like a 'proper' sports car and has a lot more character, and gets a lot more looks when you drive around :p

Ah yes, that certainly was an exciting adventure! That mouthful of dirt sure was the icing on the cake :p

Right that's it....going to Parramatta road to try one to see what the fuss is about. I have some idea though but obviously not fully....the closest car to these I have driven is my mates My99 rex that has pulled a 11.4 1/4 mile......ASSSLOADS of lag but it feels like I am going through a time warp when it comes on boost (even with 4 ppl in the car) I have driven this but have to agree its like a truck compared to the zed..... hate the whole feel of them....but christ does it hold the power well bring 4wd....poor zeds...if only....:(

If the zeds RWD handling has in some way enlightened you as to the grim finish below the glossy veneer of sports cars and inspired you to drive 4WD shopping cart, then its aggressive handling carries with it an inherent nobility and a supreme glory. All cars should be so fortunate. You say, poor Zed. I say, poor EVO.

EMO, err EVO, driven by a computer, Zed driven by you. Take your pick.

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

Short answer to the OP's original question? No.
Your drawing a comparison of apples to oranges.

However, what is your "handling" criteria?
Quck balt around the back streets?
    Country roads/Targa?
    Sweeping Freeways 230kph +
Race track? Which one? Phillip Is or Baskerville?
    Hillclimb?
    drag strip?
    Drifting?
    ....?
    ...?
    ..?
    .?

    Towing a trailer perhaps?

There is actually NO comparison unless you actually specify a criteria. "Handling" is a generic term and purely subjective from each individuals point of view.
What "handles" to one may be an evil POS to another.

On a track you might better the 4 paws times but the old clunky Zed might be a frightening evil bitch to drive!... Is THAT better handling???? Or is it just faster on the day?

Anecdotes about how well some dudes hosed off some exotic supercar or whatever such as further above are to be discounted as cool stories. Simply because the biggest vaiable of all, THE DRIVER, is not included into the equasion.
Perhaps the computer contolled 4 paw driver was a little more concerned about his 60 grand toy than the devil-may-care el-cheapo Zed punter who has no fear.............:D No pointing the finger m8, just an example...unless the shoe fits.....?.......!!!! ;-)

You can only really compare a front engined, rwd 2 door sports car with another, front engined, rwd sports car, with the SAME driver on the SAME...errr bit of road/track/freeway or trailer attached and make meaningful comparisons!!!

    Cheers

    again, very subjective

But one of my clients is a rally driver, Razvan Vlad, who is currently leading the Australian 2wd Rally Championship. I had a discussion with him regarding the topic of RWD vs AWD, and surprisingly, his opinion is that on a dry track/road, a RWD car of similar power as a AWD car will be faster. This is due to AWD being heavier, and in his opinion of of no superiority to RWD.

Obviously on a wet track, its different. Just thought this might be ingteresting.

    Cheers

parker Been around for a bit

    I have always thought

that if a 4wd system was superior to 2wd wouldn't F1 use it? Or maybe there is a rule stating they can't. As far as I am concerned and while this is not on exact topic with what has been asked, Until F1 and top fuel etc become 4wd I will never accept that it's better.

I got a soft spot for Evos, but I cannot stand wrx. Ever since the very first one I just cannot like them. I kind of respect them but fast ones are rare and they look like a shoebox. Actually shoe box is a compliment. They look like the inside of a toilet bowl after a big curry has been deposited. If I have offended any wrx owners out there I'd say sorry but I won't

When comparing a zed to an evo let's not forget aesthetics. The zed is a sleek and curvy 20 year old model. The newer evos look like the unsightly, bastard, godless end result of drunken one-night stand shennanigans between a honda civic and a chrysler 300c. At least in stock form anyway.

The zed may kill you, but at least it'll look nice while doing it.

Theres your answer m8. Its pretty simple.
There are other world classes which welcome 4wd but i tend to think their forte is when traction and road surfaces are compromised.
    Apples to oranges.

Tektrader Z32 Hoe, service me baby

I havent read all the responses

BUT I can tell you a LOT has happened in the last 20 years between the Z32 and say the 370Z.

Ever followed Robin around a circuit in his 370Z ? Or a Porsche GT3 around Sandown ? I have............

My zed has many aftermarket suspension parts arguably better than stock. Plenty of power.

There is NO comparision. Around corners I GOT LEFT FOR DEAD by both cars with stock suspensions.

The suspension Geometry on a Z32 is decades old and to be honest IT SHOWS BADLY.

Just changing shockers, springs and putting adjustable arms on it WONT DO SHIT.

There are a RAFT of mods that need to be done to the rear subframe, front suspension mounting points etc etc etc.

This is a job most of us cant even begin to fathom what we have to change. I cant, I can just be led by development work dont by JP and the changes that have been done to the arrive at the R34 and 370Z and try to emulate the same on the Z32.

Unless this is done. The Z32 WILL NEVER HANDLE OR EVEN GET CLOSE TO AN EVO.

One bit of the car that is so old hat as to be a joke is the front tension rod. WTF where they thinking? The upper and lower front control arms should have ALWAYS been wishbones and should have been forged Alloy parts. In fact ALL the suspension arms should have been Forged ALLOY. Ever had a look at an LS400 suspension arms? They are beautiful.

Even the S14 was miles better. Better geometry, better quality components. Amazing what 5 years developemnt could come up with.

The rear subframe should have been made from alloy just like the G35. It weighs a bloody tonne. No wonder it was seen as a heavy weight back in the olden days.

The sprung weight on a Z32 is a JOKE.

    Rant off. ;)
