    Often asked question......

If you use "search" you will find volumes of information relating to your subject. The Tech section would be worth a look also.

The secret ingredient for a "good" rebuild (especially if your aiming at 250-300rwkw) is CASH:D

    Stay with OEM gaskets only.
As far as a OEM Full gasket kit goes,I am only purchasing aftermarket Head gaskets.Other than that, OEM seems to be the best quality around.

OEM or TOMEI Metal Head Gasket VG30DE(TT) 1.2mm

Exchange rate is good so you are looking at $450AUD delivered.

Ditto factory gaskets, or Tomei if going for an MLS style head gasket.

You can get all the OEM parts you need from www.conceptzperformance.com.

Different story if you start looking at forged internals etc etc.

    What's your budget?

What aftermarket intervals? You can't beat the coz/z1 rebuild kits imo

By the time you inlcude coz's shipping, no fees etc, he is very hard to beat. And you know you will get the part in good time.

Not saying that Coz's prices aren't the best, but there are many many many more options for aftermarket parts. I would be surprised (but I haven't checked) if there is much difference between czp/z1/specialtyz/etc when buying aftermarket.

Different brands available from different vendors also. I don't think any of those guys sell alot of ACL gear? And different prices again if you want japanese manufacturers like Greddy/JUN/Tomei.... I'm pretty sure I could beat any of the US retailers on prices for JDM parts.

Anyways like I said in no way am I writing Coz off but many more options to consider when buying aftermarket/upgrade parts. Not to mention the actual difference between the parts.

Anyone doing an upgrade rebuild I would say speak to your engine builder first. The advice you get with a part has certain value as well.... I can only speak from my own experience but the piston/bore clearances ACL reccomend for example are very conservative and noisy (piston slap) with a low silicone content piston. Following JP's reccomendation my motor (and others that they build) runs much tighter than reccomend by ACL and no slap whatsoever.

To each their own I guess.

So you can do an equivillant full rebuild kit, including OEM full engine gasket kit, 100thou km service kit, aftermarket pistons, rings, eagle rods, new OEM oil pump, etc for $2k?

All this with OEM and Jap brand parts?

I spose it depends exactly what you are after, but if you are chassing bottom $$ then none of the Jap parts are going to be cheaper than the American stuff.

What's a set of GReddy pistons worth these days? Last I checked it was still around the $1600 mark which is ridiculous compared to Wiesco's or CP's. And after seeing the aftermath of ACL pistons letting go I'm not a fan of the design compared to Wiesco's.

I very much doubt that a lot of this jap gear is 3 times as good as the price suggests.

    I'll be buying off Coz...

Mike again you are putting words in my mouth and I'm not sure what you are trying to prove? Read the post closer that is not what I said at all.

This is the most important step if you have limited knowledge of rebuilding engines. The next trick is finding an engine builder that actually does a good job on these engines. Plenty of good testimonials on this site. Stick with any one of them and you'll be fine.

No motorvation Rob, you missunderstood my post, or I worded it wrong...

If you could do similar with mix of jap parts and OEM I'd want in...

And what do you mean 'again you are putting words in my mouth'... You are a big man and say what you like it seems...

Yeah I'm sure the QLD guys can make reccomendations.

Forum members Rollin and Drz400y are both mechanics and get great reviews on the forum.

I recently had some work (not engine related) done by Gavin Wood at AutoTech on the Gold Coast and he was very good. Lots of big power GTRs...

    Rebuild

I am having my engine (TT) presently rebuild by Niall Rollins...he is very much an the ball and will lead you in the right direction. I am opting for a standard rebulid..New bearings, new rings, PTU2, hoses, Test heads, hone bores, standard head gaskets, water bypass, new turos..etc.
But then it depents on what condition the engine is in in the first place..
    good luck mate
Whatever you do ...it costs money...I guess around 6k or so..
