well i have been driving the z about, and revved it for one of my mates, and there's a bit of black smoke coming out of the exhaust, and what appears to be soot (black dirt) on the rear bumper, what could be a cause of this? Also i need my rear passengers wheel bearing fixed (quite a bit of grinding/noise) my mechanic has no idea on how much it will be and other aspects of the bearing, (he isnt sure if its a single hub or not) so i might be looking for a new mechanic (based in bankstown but i can branch out) all help is great
Black smoke is fuel - nothing to stress about - mabe get a tune... Someone with wheel bearing experience can comment on the rest...
I haven't changed a wheel bearing for a few years but they are fairly involved - maybe about three or four hours a side depending on the gear the shop has. Better gear = faster job (excluding bad grease monkey factor LOL!)
look for used rear hubs with good bearings. Saves a heap of time and the hardest part is getting the bearing out of the housing. Plus the bearing is really expensive. A full hub is cheaper easier option by miles.
wheel bearing I done mine not to long ago. Bought a brand new one from nissan and done it myself. Its a bit involved and need a few tools to do it. I used an impac driver and spanners to do most of it. And you will need a good torque wrench, the torque specs u will find in the tech section. When you pull the old one out and bearing case stays on the hub u need to cut it of with a angle grinder be careful not to cut hub. Also use a cold chisel to break it off. So to do it it would take about 4hrs if all goes well.
