    Hey,

The zed seems to be backfiring (not even sure if that's what it's doing) during idle and low revs only (less than ~1500rpm). Dad noticed it the other day when he took it for a drive.

I just went out and started her up, and it definately happens intermittantly at idle, and low revs. I kept it steady at around 1800 revs for about a minute and... nothing... just the steady drone of the exhaust.

    Ideas anyone??

If it is only exhaust pops, that just makes you cool  Nothing to stress about :D

Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? Tuned? More boost?

It's a poping noise which is barely noticeable unless you know that it's there.

    Yes, Yes, and Kinda...

Yes, I have a Magnaflow catback exhaust
Yes, I have been dyno tuned by PZP
and Yes, I have a boost controller, but I set it to low settings whilst I got used to driving the car (I'm an L plater)

So it is small fast 'pop' noises? Not too load like a backfire? Chances are it is only exhaust popping - in which case, you are now a member of the 'cool kids' :D

does your car startup and idle badly? i.e. a noticable misfire and/or lifter tick?

also does it get better once it warms up but you still get a periodic popping?

*wears cap sideways like a 'cool kid'*
    What exactly causes exhaust popping??

The car does take a little while to start up (vroo vroo vroo vrooooooomm) but I assumed that was just coz it's an old car and I have a loose ground connector. (Which I will be fixing soon)

The idle is high when the engine is cold (around 1200-1500rmp, but drops down to around 700 when the engine warms up)

No, it doesn't have any misfires that I can hear/feel... and I don't even know what 'lifter tick' is...

And yes, the periodic 'exhaust popping' is still there when the engine is warm...

try changing the cas.. ive seen a z do this before when the cas was on the way out. even though there were no error codes and static timing looked fine via conzult

:( Does this mean that it's not just 'exhaust popping'??

its just the exhaust mate, essentially the low pressure gasses from the engine at idle is building up in the pipes/cat until it reaches a certain level at which it overcomes the back-pressure, then releases or 'pops' in a pressure wave. thats why it doesn't do it at higher rev's as the greater flow of exhaust gasses overcomes the back-pressure on the system to maintain a constant flow or 'drone' :p it did it ever since the new exhaust was fitted ;)

chances are that some of the erratic idle problems and hunting you've mentioned are also caused by the change in boost. the car was tuned at 16psi, so if the mapping and some of the settings aren't dead-on it may be running rich/lean etc?

    cheers,
    Jadyn
