Battery Cut-out switch location?

I have my battery in original position and need to fit a cut-out or isolation switch that can be operated from car exterior. As anyone who has tried, theres not much room under the bonnet. Where have other members fitted theirs.

Any help would be appreciated

I have mine sitting next to the battery. There is enough room for it between the positive terminal and the IACV unit, just infront of the firewall.

He needs an exterior one for CAMS rules I think, so that a marshal can kill electricity/engine for safety/fire reasons.

mine is going where the hatch lock is .

As I never use it to open the hatch ,always use the internal latch

 

But his battery is in stock location.

 

Could you cut a small square out of the passenger cowl and mount the switch through it on a bracket?

 

cant use a 2 pin red key isolator switch from revolution race gear? (which fits in location I said)

doesnt matter where battery is?

mine is behind passenger seat under quarter window side trim

 

This shouldn't be unnecessary for speed events.

But if you have to have it then probably the best place to place it is going to be under the cowling on the firewall. You wouldn't run with the cowling in place, better engine bay venting with it off.

 

Don't the CAMS rulings state where it has to be and what access?

Correct. If you are fitting the cut out switch for the purpose of getting a log book then the CAMS manual details where the activation point must be located. You also need to keep in mind that it must shut the car off, not isolate the battery. If you just isolate the battery then the car will keep running off the alternator.

Martin, do you have any pics of where you installed this?

CAMS requires it to be installed below or in the vicinity of the base of the A pillar on the drivers side. I'd normally install this in the upper rear of the front guard, but there's bugger all clearance on the inside

 

Scrap that, going to mount it on a bracket mounted underneath the top rear corner of the guard. Bracket is made, just need to remove the guard again to fit it.

But the s-14 I'm building, mounted under the bonnet hinge.

 

Thanks Wizard, that's an idea I didn't think of.

I've already made the bracket to mount to the underside of the guard, but this will require drilling a couple of holes in the guard to mount the bracket.

Whereas your idea could just use one of the existing bonnet hinge bolts. Worth another look

 

Wizard's idea above was a good one but wasn't going to work for my application;
Cable wasn't long enough to reach from the drivers side A pillar, across to the other side, and then back inside the car to the centre console.
Also I wasn't confident of being able to position the cable so it didn't catch on either the bonnet or the drivers side wiper.

So I went with my original idea above. TBH other than the screws in the guard, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.
Very neat and tucked away nicely in the corner out of the air flow.
