Just had an interesting chat with my business partner, and it looks like we are going to be putting an electric engine (or 2) in my Zed. We are not talking about an economy electric car here, we are talking twin engine electric supercar with the kind of acceleration that gets the girls all wet. Anyone interested in being involved in this project please let me know.
http://www.geekmyride.org/ will have more details as they become available. I'll also be posting updates here. Most of the work will be done around Melbourne, I'm in Nortcote, my business partner is out in Croydon, but we will most likely be looking to do the install at a garage somewhere in between.
very good to see some one doing something completely different , as much as i love my zed times will change there is no reason we should be driving around in 1600 kg chunks of steel to get to work , it should be more like a 500kg electric car ,
If you're serious about this project, shoot Shaun Williams an email and get talking to him. He's converted his Toyota Echo to all-electric power, and no doubt he'd be able to give you some pointers on how to go about electrifying your Zed. He's very approachable and I'm sure he'd have some sage advice for you. Email: shaun@electric-echo.com The Australian Electric Vehicle Association also has some useful info on their site (http://www.aeva.asn.au/). I've driven David Sharp's electric Daihatsu Charade (another useful contact for you, although his car was bought with the conversion already done), and I've gotta say, these things have got some impressive characteristics (100% torque from 0rpm!). It'd be great to see the same thing done to a Z32. Good luck with your project.
Should be good. I know they are lighter but there's a 180sx out there running on the blue stuff, thats used as a drag car. BAH... im trying to find a website backing this up but can't lol. Was a topic on SilWA couple of years back. Anyway... I believe me
There are better platforms around than a Z32 to make electric. The base zed is too heavy to be stuffing an electric motor in.

Yeah, I'm sure there are better platforms, but I like my Zed. And, there are a few things we can do about her being to heavy; 1) Do like Nissan did in the first place. Too heavy? just add more power. 2) Make sure we add only light weight components 3) Strip out all of the original weight that we can If we can do it I would like to remove the entire drive train, mount the motors in the back and the batteries in the front. I expect that we will use at least 2 motors. This is not going to be a simple rip out the petrol engine and bolt an electric motor in its place job. Heating, cooling, aircon, etc, etc will all be replaced with lighter and more suitable systems wherever possible. I'm thinking li-ion, but we need to look at temperature issues etc.
great to see something different...... soooo are you getting electronic noises for the exhaust, coz i mean a sports car you cant hear.....noooooooooooo
hmm i see major problems with weight distribution with no normal engine and electric motors for the rear wheels. i would say youd have to chuck a fair amount of batteries under the bonnet.
I'll be interested to see how you go with this! Good luck. Sounds like it could be great fun. Make it go like this http://www.teslamotors.com/ 350Km range, 0-100 in 3.9 Seconds.
