hey guys my alternator belt has been squeeling so i've got under the car this morning and have tightened the belt adjuster, i was able to tighten it but only a couple of turns of the spanner before it reached the maximum it could be adjusted. The belt still seems a little loose compared to the others and now when i turn the car on the squeel does not go away as before it would go away after about a minute.

Is there anywhere else where you can adjust the tightness of this belt or could it be that the belt has stretched too much?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Nup, belt has stretched too far. Buy a new one. You could just use some belt grip in the meantime

    Left field reply:
There are two bolts to undo to tighten the belt: One at the front, and the one that points to the side of the vehicle. Both need to be loosened to tension the belt. The front bolt allows the tensioning cradle to slide / lock closed, while the side bolt only tensions until you clamp it off again.
In my younger and more vulnerable years, i stripped a thread because i muscled it too hard and didnt know that 2 bolts needed to be undone.

    Good point Mitch

Could also be the power steering or air con belt so may as well replace all 3 if of a similar age.

    NA std P/S belt: 3PK 925 A/C: 4PK 960

While the alternator belt is off - spin the pulley by hand to check if there is any bearing wear in the alternator.

cheers guys, yeah i know about the two bolts :) did my homework before tightening, agree may as well do all the belts so car will be off to Gavin as i probably won't have the time to do the job during the week (not to mention that i've never removed/replaced belts before) and i can't stand the squeeling for a whole week.

    Alternator belt fixed

Took the Z to Gavin Woods today and he found that the bolt holding the alternator on had come away and was hanging  it seems that someone in the past put the wrong bolt back in so all that was holding it on was the bolt at the adjuster.

Well all fixed thats the main thing!
