Bit rusty on all the old "15 year old rule" and all that jazz and any changes that may have come into effect. In short I guess my question is 1) Is it YET possible to import a 2K spec 300ZX TT? 2) if no, will it ever be possible? When? No I'm not thinking of doing it right now, and nor to I have the ready funds right now, but it's most definitely something I'd consider for the right car. Regardless of how you guys may "think" I now view the Z32, I think it would be amazing to own one as "near new" as you can get. Even though I've "had" a Z32....I dont think I count myself as having "experienced Z32 ownership" if that makes ANY sense at all lol.
I spoke to an importer a couple of months back regarding this very question, as I had my eye on a yellow '98. Apparently zed's after 1997 aren't importable YET, unless its a private import (you owned the car in Japan, and are bringing it over).
so is that a moving date? Or a "year of manufacture" like the stupid "anything built before 89 is a "classic" rule?
yup, its the passenger airbag which is the issue. some zeds have a drivers a/b, thats fine, but as soon as it has the passenger a/b its not allowed.......which sucks badly
There is another way Personal imports from japan directly are hard, they we're made hard as it was being rorted, import to Nz then from nz to australia will need the help of a nz resident but requirements are dead easy. Or just go live in japan for a year.

I'd post links but it's a drag via forum runner. In a nutshell they can only be imported as a personal import if you have owned the car while considered a resident of Japan.
wrong import to NZ, have a friend and relative own it in their name,register in their name, insure in their name. Apply to have it imported to Australia after 12 months as a personal import, has to be done in the name of the NZ friend/relative, you need to show is a NZ drivers license, proof of rego, proof of address. Once its in the country transfer in your own name, there is no restriction of sale/transfer once the car is in the country. If you personal import from japan the list is alot longer, the documents need to be translated which cost a bit, basically you have to live there or know someone who does and if you want to bring anything over you have to prove you are coming back to australia for good, ie job offer, rental agreeement for house. Via NZ means paying additional shipping from NZ to Aus and you have to wait a year. source: me done 15 year import, done personal import and done SEVs import.

You're right, in fact I have the entire cast of Outrageous Fortune lining up to purchase, import, and store a car for me, not to mention ship it between two countries with 12 months downtime in between, all for less than the cost of translating some Japanese documents. It's a wonder the rest of you aren't onboard haha

General personal import requirements - Live in the origin country for 12 months - bought vehicle in question in country of origin - qualifying period must be 12 months prior to application to import - proof of this required includes, vehicle registered in your name (your NZ proxy) garaged close to the residents where you (your NZ proxy) lives, must have had a valid licence for the vehicle (your NZ proxy) - to have your proxy apply to import to australia they need to be: australian citizen, australian perm resident, new zealand citizen Now the above applies to NZ to AU imports, they are all the requirements, piece of piss if you know a reliable kiwi. Change NZ to Japan and you get these additional hum dingers from our friends in Canberra: - translated copy of parking permit in your name - translated copy of compulsory tax document in your name - a statement of travel showing when your movements in/out of japan and the duration of time outside japan, if you went outside japan they want to know why and proof to that effect - a certified copy of every page of your passport and any other non australian passport - prove your intention to remain in australia when you come back (timing to coincide with car arrival) eg employment details in Australia, resignation proof from your Japan job, rental agreement for Australian property, etc you can get any car you want (right hand drive, similar build quality to AU) do you know how much a low km 3-5 year old 911 turbo is in Japan? vs here, or ferrari, R35 GTR any car of that ilk, the difference is massive down side you need a trustworthy worthy kiwi living in NZ, wait a year and have to pay for shipping from nz to au.
