This shows the HSV extractor on the passenger side. Fits well and lines up pretty close to the exhaust flange.

The drivers side however is a bit of a squeeze. The HSV extractor looks like it goes to the outside of the steering shaft. The one I will fabricate will go to the inside and quickly turn down to the exhaust flange.

For some of the more fiddly bits, Here is the machined bell housing.

I sacrificed the spare flywheel I had and hacked it to bolt up to the ls1 crank so I could take measurements for the custom fly Im having made. Turns out it lines up pretty well to the starter motor. The starter motor gear sits about 8mm back from the ring gear which will engage fine.

Last pic is the gearbox input shaft with its tip inside the end of the crankshaft (giggles at the innuendo):p Pilot bearing is pretty easy on this. The crankshaft has a sealed ball bearing the fits into it. I got a bearing that has an ID .5m smaller than the OD of a z32 brass pilot bushing. So all i have to do is press it in. Winning :D

Here is the almost finished header for the drivers side. Making headers is the most frustrating job I have done. Its almost as if every thing you do is wrong and doesn't line up right. I went through 3 different ways of running the piping before I found one that would work. In hindsight I shouldnt have flappy wheeled the welds but we will see how it goes. I just need to fit a flange, do a leak test and give it a coat of paint.

The factory collectors were very restrictive, so I made some propper collectors with a spike. Only down side is now I have to cut and weld the same type of collector the passenger header.

In other news 4 of these arrived last week :D

    +42 offset.

Offsets are modest but im not in the mood to hack guards right now. :p

modest? are you going to have it as a 4 x 4 or

I mean nothing crazy aggressive like +20 or +0 :p

Having said that once I dial the camber out and put some 275/285 tyres on these those guards look like they may need a good roll :p

Frustratingly Im not going to be able to lower this car as much as I'd like intially. The 3 inch exhaust hangs about an inch below the rails around where the starter motor is. May have to do a partial oval system later down the track.

they will fit fine, go for functional man, you want to be able to drive it and drive hard.

sensible offests, sensible drop, bad ass motor and a 5 speed, na rear end, it will be awesome

  9. Romonski

you can still have low offsets and be able to drive it and drive it hard....

If that rim is bolted up, there doesn't seem to be much clearance for wider than your rim width tyres. They might even need undersized and stretched.

But +42? with that much poke, must be a deceptive photo angle.

BTW, impressed with the decisions and progress you have made to rescue this Zed.

    Update

So plenty has happened since the last post. Firstly the flywheel arrived.

Thats a Custom TT flywheel with an LS1 bolt pattern.

Then I had a new pilot bushing adapter made.

Next I addressed the pissy little oil pan.

And with a bit of extra ally sheet and a TIG welder, built a 5 Ltr sump with a trap door baffling system to help control the oil in a shallow pan. My TIG welding wont win any awards but it doesn't leak which is good enough for me.

With the help of MagicMike and SimonZx we did possibly the quickest engine pull in history. We had a compeltely sock car stripped of exhaust, driveline and engine in just over 2 hrs.

    Engine be gone.

    Obligatory engine bay shot

And with a few days of cleaning she is clean>

Then is was clutch on, gearbox on, and stick it in the car.

    WOT V8???

and back on the ground with PS, ALT and aircon pumps fitted>

This week has mostly being doing the plumbing, I have the oil cooler and filter run, PS modified and fitted and figuring out what to do with the Radiator. The plan at this point is to run a NA width Radiator with a 78mm thick core, only catch is that it will be short so that I can fit an "over the radiator" air intake. Ill have to fit a custom expansion tank as the radiator is lower that the engine but that will work similar to the factory "commodore" cooling system.

This as how she is as of tonight.

AN fittings are freaking awesome. Its a pity they are so damn expensive.

    keep it up mate

    Nice work mate!

I would love to hear your thoughts on how it handles and stops compared with the old VG with the lighter motor in the front and the weight distribution being a little more even. Watching closely!! :-D

I am also curious as to the weight and balance after the conversion. I can say only through observation that when I put the car back on the ground and have moved it around a bit the front suspension was at least 50mm higher then when the VG was in it

Ill put it on the scales when its finished for sure.

I'd have finished that last project if I hadn't being mislead by that dodgy engineer. I still am angry that that kit could never see the streets. There was so much awesome in it. :(

However I dont miss sanding and I agree, this car will be something special. Maybe not intially with a stock engine but once heads and a cam is done, it will be a "scary, fun, monster"........ That looks granny spec :p

    I find that offensive :p

After refitting the engine again I noticed that the ring gear was on the flywheel backwards. LS1 starter is on the engine side of the fly unlike the zed which has it on the gearbox. I had to wait untill the 5th for the machine shop to open to get it changed over. While I had the engine back out I knuckled down and did the wiring for the engine. What was initially daunting became alot easier once the looms were split and all the conduit removed. The loom essentially comes down to a 4 wire setup, Earth, B+, Ign, Fuel pump.

After getting the fly back and refitting the engine I started getting it ready to start. Aftermarket fuel reg was fitted and thankfully it had a gauge as the stock NA pump must have some built in regulator. I couldn't get the pressure above 46psi. Swapped that out for a Walbro pump and she went straight up to 80psi which I then brought back to 53psi which the LS1 needs.

So I reverse primed the oil, dummy fit the radiator, hooked up the battery and turned the key and this happened.
