I think you will find that CAMS regulations state that openings inside the vehicle that a drivers arm could get lodged in need to be covered (to prevent your arm being ripped off in a roll over). And depending on which category you are racing in some require the retention of "door trims", there is a reason why the V8 teams go to the trouble of making carbon fiber door trims.
Yeah, depending on what class I end up settling on I'll gut them and either put very thin sheets of something light like aluminium on them or the minimum amount of the door trim that is required to meet the regulations. It may well end up getting logged as a sports car to be able to do all teh wierd and wonderful stuff I would like to do, it wont be super competitive in a class like that but for most of the things I'd be doing like MSCA and the NDSOC/FPV events that would not matter.
Solid mounts? Finally an update, been doing a few boring tidying up things and working on a lot of non-car stuff, I made a pretty cool pond in the back yard! Taught myself to weld and made a bench and a stand for a banch grinder which should make a lot of jobs much easier too. I've also got my hands on a VG30 for the right price so that will be going in it for now. The engine mounts are well and truely destroyed so I was thinking it might be a good time to go solid monts and do the rear subframe while I'm at it. I'm assuming solid engine mounts have to be custom made, what about subframe mounts, does anyone do a kit with solid mounts? I assume there is no point in a solid gearbox mount?
EVERY point in a solid gearbox mount to go along with solid fronts. Youll break the solid fronts allowing the back of the engine to wag around. Benefits of solids? Not known. I dont see any problem tho. Ive raced an MG Midget/Sprite hybrid with a "B" series engine and Cortina gearbox bolted in solid. Almost removes your teeth fillings from your head but it matters not in a track car. Just replace the curerent rubber mounts with box section steel. Easy. Those old single stick VG's are pretty breathless tho compared to the VGDE. Youll learn to dislike it fairly smartly. Its quite a difference. VGDE mounts wont bolt straight on to VG but you should be able to grub out the bolt holes to suit. About 5mm each way. Youll see. No brainer. Im pretty sure COZ does solid subframe replacements. Ive seen them on here for sale S/H in the past. Have fun E
Z1 does solid alloy engine mounts if I recall correctly. Solid subframe mounts are common and haven't seen a solid gearbox mount, but they'd be pretty easy to fab up.
Yep, found them on the new and improved Coz website too, not sure if they were not on the old one or I just could not find them. Seems odd that everyone has the solid engine mounts but no-one has the gearbox mounts.
The may consider the NISMO mounts solid enough. But kart-boy is right, you don't want a mix of soft and solid mounts in the drivetrain.
Makes sense, I guess the best way to make a solid gearbox mount would be to replace the bit of rubber in my old one with a similar shape bit of alloy. Worth it do you think?
Sounds good, besides, if this thing is in any way comfortable to drive when we're done we have clearly failed somewhere...

Are all solid mounts as good as each other? I'm pretty sure Coz and/or Z1 have them slightly cheaper than that but if those ones are special it's probably worth a few extra dollars. Gearbox mounts seem easy enough, tube or a small block of alloy?
Fancy looking mounts but why pay for something when a simple chunk of thick walled box section mild will do the trick? Cost you SFA apart from... what? 10 minutes to drill 2 holes and whack in your bolts?? I know which way Id be going. Who gives a toss about what stuff like engine mounts looks like in a race car....?? Spray them red for that cool "race" look!!!! L8r E
Why not? If it were 5 or 6 mm thick walled box tube, it would hold up quiet well. Would be terribly rough if the engine wasnt completely balanced, but there wouldnt be any reason why it wouldnt work fine for this purpose.

Thanks, I'm aiming to get that stuff incorporated into the cage so I won't get that one but I'll save the images just incase that doesn't work out and I need to make something like that up.
