look a couple pages back, US$745 ($880ish aussie) for the bar + $685 shipping, so all up over $1500 to get a 2 seater bar to australia.

Considering the threshold for GST is $1000AUD (calculated on goods plus freight) the quantity in this instance has no relevance to customs fees etc.

What about the free trade agreement with USA, what with goods being manufactured or "finished" in the US not being subject to said duty fee's. (Are they still subject to GST in this case?)

So what happens when you do a GB to save on shipping for these things... say you buy 5. $900 * 5 = $4500
They can undervalue it but won't that get suspicious with multiple bars?

That's what he's saying. A single bar is over the threshold (900+600 for shipping). So if you buy one, or buy 10 you're still going to get hit

You dont get charged on the freight component of a purchase. Its on the article price only.

So if its $800 one off in one consignment then it will dodge GST.

Also WTF has the US free trade agreement got to do with a bar made in South America and shipped to the US before coming here??

The Customs Value is used to calculate the import duty and excludes international freight costs. But the freight costs, and import duty, insurance, etc are all added back for the purposes of calculating GST.

If the value of the shipment is under $1000, you don't pay duty or GST.

Customs Value is not always what you paid. If they think your cost of acquisition is too cheap, they can choose another value - identical goods value, similar goods value or deductive value.

The import duty went from 10% to 5% from 1 January 2010, but rates for "US originating goods" are nil. You would need to go searching to find the exact definition of "US originating goods". Could mean anything.

There is a good guide to import duties/GST on eBay:

Correct, To determine the cost for duty purposes its item value ONLY. Under $1000 not dutiable so no DUTY OR GST

If the item value is over $1000.

Then the item value is dutiable and will have the freight amount added to calculate GST to arrive at the total amount of taxes applied.

    yes

so in this case shipping 2 to save freight costs only ends up getting the GST hit on top. So either way will probably cost the same anyway if not more.
