Project Rollin
As most of you will remember the headgasket failed on my zed after being badly overheated. i have still been driving it for the past 2 months anyway but today i finally pulled the engine out. lucky for me i have a 2 post hoist and snap on tools so it makes it a bit easier.
I have taken about 100 photos throughout the removal so if amyone needs to see a pic of something in particular or measuremnets of something then let me know. ------------------------------ ![]() Car on the hoist. ![]() The current Zed replacement ![]() The engine bay at 9am today ![]() Half stripped out ![]() Coming out ![]() This is how i looked when i left at 5pm I started at 9am on my own, then the young apprentice ( a different one) came to help and then my brother came just as we were taking it out. i decided to drop the box out from underneath because i wasnt sure if it could be removed with the motor. it was real easy to take out, it only took us about 15 mins to remove it! from start to finish it took us 5 hours to remove the engine/gearbox and all the goodies. i dunno if this is a good time or not , i guess it is . we decided to take the front bar and a few things like that off since ill be putting on the new AB flug bumper anyway, i forgot to get the AC degassed on friday and my auto elec doesnt work on saturdays s we pissed around to take the engine out while leaving the AC compressor and pipes still sealed up in the bay. Once the engine was out i pulled the plenum , LH turbo+ manifolds, water pump, cambelt covers and a few other things . this took me about 90mins. then a few beers, fish and chips and home i went. I dont have the energy to write anymore so ill open this up to comments/questions

Cool stuff man, can I ask why you pulled it out from the top if you have a 2 poster? It would have taken half the time to drop it all from the bottom! I can't wait to get our hoist in.... I'm sick of pulling out engines/boxes/diff's etc by crawling under the car propped up on stands.

yeah i was thinking of dropping it out from underneath, thats how ive being doing it with the RB in my bm, i need to keep it as a rolling shell because the rebuild will take a while so i didnt want to pull the front suspension out and then put it back in only to take it out again

Ah yeah, fair enough then!
I suppose it would be near impossible to remove from underneath when keeping the AC in tact too.

yeah i guess so, i could have just cracked the line and let the gas go outside, but thats bad for the environment and my AC man doesnt charge me to degas/regas

Big days
work there, well done . Good move taking the bar off, you get better axcess for sure, and no damage. What parts will you use for the engine build? I'm leaning toward stock internals, and the z1 gt600r kit.

i intend to do absolutely everything i can this time round, or at least build a solid foundation. I will be spending most of my money on the internals. ACL pistons. chromemoly rings, scat rods. getting the crank treated. mild port work, backcut and polish the valves.
i am leaning towards a pair of KKR 380's with custom dumps, test pipes and high flow cats. the other things i will try to get but i can leave till next time are adjustable cam gears, cams, wolf 3d management and a few other things i cant think of at the moment.

Did you see ZX2NV's engine 4 sale
I think you might be able to fastfoward your plans a bit. As I saw it the engine was near done before he decided to sell.

Keep doing your own engine, you seem to know what you're doing, and you know you can do it at about half the cost of the other motor! Make sure you use a good machine shop, use OEM gaskets, replace the head bolts, have a good time. Enjoy

Rollin KKR turbos what sort of mods do you have to do to those things to get them to fit the VG and are you worried about reliability at all once in. Looking good so far keep it up and the pics coming I love these threads ![]()

haha the z replacement
I was gonna say I never knew a mechanic who drove a decent car...
and then I see what youre 'rollin' in. haha. typical mechanic. My father was a mechanic for 20 years, we never had anything but ghetto rides. he did have a race car and then race bikes. Respect goes out to the boys who show up in a 'bucket towing a race machine huh. So put a towbar on the yellow dunger and get the zx ready for the track ![]() |

thanks baron. yeah ill keep doing htis one, its not the first engine i have ever built , thats for sure. i rebuilt my first engine in the driveway of my dads house when i was 15. that was in a mk1 golf so it was quite a bit easier.
i have a great but expensive machineshop lined up. they have done 40 or 50 engines for us with no comebacks so they are tries and proven. last time i went over there they had an engine that ran a 4.9 e.t . so more than qualified to do my VG.

g'day jase. look i dont know whats involved in installing the KKR's , i think it has been done by another forum member so maybe we can find out.
I am concerned about reliability like anyone is , and with KKR's coming in at less than half the price of Garretts then you would think the quality would be inferior. I expect to only do 4-5000 kays a year in it so i dont think it is alot of work for the turbos.

more pics
![]() well about another hour got us to here. ![]() with a headgasket that is not badly blowing it is difficult to see what has gone wrong. this picture iis out of focus bu you should be able to see that rust colour on the headgasket ring and the top of the bore. ![]() another hour got us here. the internals were in remarkable condition, it could have easily gone without a rebuild except for there was quite a bit of piston to bore clearance, i will measure it tomoro but at an estimate i would say its over 6 thou which is quite a bit ![]() here you can see the main bearing girdle, good engineering ![]() a pic of a piston with my thumb for reference. you can see the skirts are very short
